Mule deer in this unit use the mountain terrain for summer range and migrate to lower sage-covered foothills and valleys during the fall hunting season. The Santa Rosa Range rises dramatically from the surrounding basin, creating vertical relief and habitat diversity that supports quality bucks.

Santa Rosa Range Eastern Flanks

The east-facing slopes and canyon systems of the Santa Rosa Range hold bucks in aspen parks and conifer-sage transition habitat throughout September and into October. Access via NF roads from the Paradise Valley side.

Foothill Sagebrush Transition

During the October rut, bucks drop from the high country into foothill sagebrush terrain to find does. Glass the mountain-to-basin transition zone at first and last light for moving deer.

Creek Drainage Bottoms

Willow and riparian margin vegetation in creek drainages provides crucial water and thermal cover. Bucks use these corridors to travel between feeding and bedding areas — work slowly through them in early morning.
