Nevada Hunting Guide — Mountain Goat

Unit 101 covers about 436 square miles of Elko County around the East Humboldt Range, where goats use the highest, roughest ground from Humboldt Peak north to Greys Peak. Where to Find Mountain Goats in Unit 101: Humboldt Peak to Greys Peak, Angel Lake and Lizzies Basin

Humboldt Peak to Greys Peak

Goats in the East Humboldt Range live in the highest, most extreme and most treacherous terrain the unit has. Their use is widespread, from Humboldt Peak in the south to Greys Peak in the north. Hole in the Mountain Peak is the tallest named summit inside the line, and Tent Mountain and Chimney Rock are among the other high points.

Angel Lake and Lizzies Basin

Much of the historical harvest has centered on two access points, Angel Lake and Lizzies Basin. In summer, goat home ranges are often tied to snowbanks that hang on late and to high-elevation water. Plan your glassing around both.

NDOW asks hunters to arrive in the best physical shape they can and to be mentally ready for harsh mountain terrain and weather. Take that seriously. The ground between Humboldt Peak and Greys Peak is steep enough that reaching a goat is only half the job, and getting it and yourself back down safely is the other half. Choose a stalk you can finish and a recovery you can manage.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A mountain goat tag for this group is good in unit 101, about 436 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Elko County. The one named range inside the line is East Humboldt Range. The highest named points are Hole in the Mountain Peak (11,284 ft), Humboldt Peak (10,983 ft) and Greys Peak (10,665 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 5,345 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 18 springs inside it, Magpie Spring, Jerry Crab Spring, Rattlesnake Spring and Agee Spring among them.

The lay of it

  • 5,367–9,776 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 6,710 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
  • 436.3 sq mi inside the boundary.

Water on the ground

  • 49 tanks
  • 176 springs
  • 46 stream segments
  • 3 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
