Where to Find Elk in Units 078, 107: Nanny Creek, Sixmile Canyon and the Spud Patch burn
Nanny Creek, Sixmile Canyon and the Spud Patch burn
NDOW's elk sheet covers a wider set of units, and only its notes on Units 078 and 107 apply to this tag. Unit 078 is the busier of the two, with high elk densities during parts of the year. The sheet names three places where elk are taken consistently: Nanny Creek, Sixmile Canyon and the Spud Patch burn. Put those at the top of your scouting list.
A sizable share of the area's elk also spend part of the year on the Big Springs Ranch. That's private ground, and NDOW reminds hunters to respect it.
Water developments and horse-worn range
This is arid country. Natural water is scarce, and numerous wildlife water developments are scattered through the unit group, so early-season hunters should key on water sources and the habitat right around them. NDOW also warns that wild horses have overused most of the ground. Look for the parts of the mountain that still carry decent vegetation, because that's where the sheet says to focus.
Unit 107 holds a moderate number of elk at certain times of year. Its tangled land ownership has kept the harvest there low over the years, and every place the sheet names by name sits in Unit 078.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A elk tag for this group is good in units 078 and 107, about 504 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Elko County. The named ranges inside the line are Pequop Mountains and Wood Hills. The highest named points are Little Cedar Mountain (8,285 ft) and Rockland (5,716 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 5,691 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 7 springs inside it, Big Springs, Long Canyon Spring, Ralphs Warm Springs and Mahogany Spring among them.
