Where to Find Mule Deer in Units 071 - 079, 091: the southeast Jarbidge Mountains and the Snake Mountains

The southeast Jarbidge Mountains and the Snake Mountains

Deer occupy the whole unit group at varying densities, from the sagebrush foothills to the upper peaks. During the any-legal-weapon seasons, NDOW finds the biggest concentrations in the southeast part of the Jarbidge Mountains and all through the Snake Mountains. Unit 091 has the smallest population in the group.

The fall migration south

Major migrations happen in late September and through October. Many deer leave Units 071, 072 and 073, pass through Unit 075 and end up wintering in Units 077, 078 and 079. Smaller, local moves into Unit 074, and north into Idaho, depend on the weather and grow as snowfall increases. Unit 076 holds a mix of resident and wintering deer.

From timberline down to pinyon-juniper

The habitat range here is wide: subalpine ground above timberline, slopes covered in conifer and mahogany, heavy aspen, deep canyons with creeks and rivers, rolling sagebrush, and pinyon-juniper winter range. In summer, deer use dense cover at mid elevations. As fall goes on they move onto lower, rolling slopes on their way to winter range, so where you hunt should follow the calendar.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A mule deer tag for this group is good in units 071, 072, 073, 074, 075, 076, 077, 078, 079 and 091, about 5,932 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Elko County. The named ranges inside the line are Leach Range, Pilot Range, Windermere Hills, Leppy Hills, Salmon River Range and Snake Mountains. The highest named points are Jarbidge Peak (10,790 ft), Matterhorn (10,741 ft) and Pilot Peak (10,697 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,295 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 218 springs inside it, Chicken Spring, Union Spring, Chicken Creek Springs and Hillside Spring among them.
