Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Unit 068: Black Mountain, Rock Creek Gorge and White House Spring
Black Mountain, Rock Creek Gorge and White House Spring
The Sheep Creek Range is the main occupied bighorn habitat in Unit 068. It's a long mountainside and rim face, more than 25 miles end to end, climbing about 2,000 feet from its base to a plateau on top. A series of short canyons cuts into it, along with Rock Creek Gorge. Rams have historically been seen most often near Black Mountain, in Rock Creek Gorge and around White House Spring.
The southern and eastern Sheep Creek Range
Sheep can turn up anywhere in the rugged parts of the range, particularly on its southern and eastern sides. Where they are in a given year depends on feed and water. During the season they usually stay close to reliable water. A cool, wet fall changes that, because milder temperatures and good moisture let them spread out much more widely. So a dry year narrows your search, and a wet one widens it.
The southern part of the unit, where most of the sheep live, is a checkerboard of BLM and private sections. That pattern shapes where you can glass from and where you can walk.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in unit 068, about 1,766 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Eureka County, Elko County and Lander County. The named ranges inside the line are Sheep Creek Range, Tuscarora Mountains and Santa Renia Mountains. The highest named points are Beaver Peak (8,781 ft), Lake Mountain (7,947 ft) and Marys Mountain (7,699 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,558 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 31 springs inside it, Izzenhood Ranch Springs, Sagebrush Spring, Coyote Spring and Warm Spring among them.

The lay of it
- 4,528–6,555 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,534 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,766.5 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Water on the ground
- 24 tanks
- 39 springs
- 54 stream segments
- 4 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
