Colorado Elk Mule Deer Pronghorn Black Bear

Unit 54 (Gunnison Basin)

Colorado Hunting Guide — Elk, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Black Bear

Unit 54 is the Gunnison Basin country of Gunnison County, about 584 square miles framed by U.S. 50, Colo. 135, Kebler Pass Road and Curecanti Creek. Elevations run from roughly 8,000 feet to over 13,000. CPW's brochure gives the boundary but no elk-specific breakdown, so you'll plan from terrain. Scouting decides this tag. Roughly half the unit is public by our read, and you need to know which half you're standing on.

Where to Find Elk in Unit 54: High Basins, Soap Mesa and the Low Benches

CPW's unit material for 54 gives a legal boundary and a herd code (E-5), and that's it. There's no agency narrative saying where the elk hold. Everything below comes from our terrain read, not from a manager's say-so. Treat it as a scouting plan, not a promise.

The edges that frame the unit

The boundary runs north along the Gunnison River–North Fork of the Gunnison River divide and CR 12 (Kebler Pass Road). Colo. 135 is the east line. U.S. 50, Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Gunnison River make up the south, and Curecanti Creek closes the west. Those are the roads and waterways that get you in. They aren't elk locations. Coming off Colo. 135 puts you on the east edge. Kebler Pass Road is your northern access. U.S. 50 along the reservoir is the southern one.

Mill Basin and West Elk Basin

These are the two highest basins we flagged as holding country, at about 12,184 and 12,011 feet. Around them sit West Elk Peak (13,020), North Baldy Mountain (12,849) and Middle Baldy (12,679). That's big alpine ground. It's the place to look early, while animals are still up high, and it's the first country to empty when weather pushes them down. Don't plan a late-season hunt up here.

Soap Basin, Soap Mesa and Sixmile Gulch

This is our strongest mid-elevation pick. Soap Basin sits near 10,450 feet, Soap Mesa tops out around 10,050, and Sixmile Gulch holds at about 9,970. Nearby Flat Top (10,575), Haystack Mountain (11,013) and Gibson Ridge (11,054) give you high ground to look down into that country. Basin floors, gulch bottoms and mesa edges are where we'd put the first days of scouting.

Dillon Mesa, Pearson Point and the low end

Dillon Mesa (9,411) and Pearson Point (9,299) are the lower benches. Pioneer Lookout Point, a cliff at about 8,034 feet, marks the bottom of the elevation range. When snow forces elk off the high basins, this is the zone to check. Public land is only part of the unit, so confirm ownership on a current map before you commit to any bench.

Water

Rock Spring and Poison Spring are both named in our data. Nobody has given us flow, so don't count on either one. Mark them on your map and check them in person.

CPW's 2026 draw recap for elk in unit 54, by hunt code, with resident and nonresident kept apart because the two draw from different licence pools:

  • EE054O1A — Archery, 1st Season, Either Sex, nonresident: 415 applicants for 58 licences, 14% drawn, 4 preference points needed
  • EM054O2R — Rifle, 2nd Season, Bull Only, nonresident: 377 applicants for 263 licences, 69.8% drawn, no preference points needed
  • EM054O1R — Rifle, 1st Season, Bull Only, resident: 355 applicants for 118 licences, 33.2% drawn, no preference points needed
  • EE054O1A — Archery, 1st Season, Either Sex, resident: 352 applicants for 151 licences, 42.9% drawn, no preference points needed

Colorado runs a pure preference-point draw, so the point figure above is the requirement the agency published for that code in that year, not a forecast for the next one. There are 20 further code-and-residency combinations in the recap for this unit. Figures checked against CPW's own statistics pages on 2026-06-09.
