Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Bighorn Sheep Hunt Area 26
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names bighorn sheep hunt area 26 "Bennett Mountain". It runs to about 252 square miles, entirely in Carbon County. WGFD reports these bighorn sheep as the Ferris-Seminoe herd unit, which also takes in bighorn sheep hunt area 17. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the bighorn sheep stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Medicine Bow River, North Platte River and Sage Creek
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 9 walks the line around bighorn sheep hunt area 26 corner by corner. It starts where the Medicine Bow River enters the North Platte River. On the way round it follows Carbon County Road 102, B.L.M. Road 3115 and Carbon County Road 291, and Medicine Bow River, North Platte River, Sage Creek and South Fork. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 6 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 3.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 26s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 26 also belongs to its deer, antelope and moose hunt areas 26. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the bighorn sheep area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Public Access Areas
Public Access Areas such as Seminoe Reservoir-Bow Arm (3 acres) and North Platte River-Miracle Mile (4 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
High ground inside the line: Schneider Ridge, Horseshoe Ridge and Chalk Bluff
Named high points inside bighorn sheep hunt area 26 include Schneider Ridge at 7,224 feet, Horseshoe Ridge at 7,120 feet, Chalk Bluff at 6,959 feet and Bunker Hill at 6,406 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.
Holding ground: Johnson Canyon, Prior Draw and Schoolhouse Canyon
Below them sit Johnson Canyon at 7,735 feet, Prior Draw at 7,621 feet, Schoolhouse Canyon at 7,474 feet, Case Canyon at 7,178 feet and Norbacher Canyon at 7,110 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.
Water: Sips Spring, Willow Springs and Indian Spring
Named water inside the line includes Sips Spring, Willow Springs, Indian Spring, Sullivan Spring, Wildcat Springs and Red Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside bighorn sheep hunt area 26 runs from 5,933 feet to 8,782 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

Search Wyoming Draw OddsWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for bighorn sheep in bighorn sheep hunt area 26, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 6 (ewe or lamb), residents: 87 first-choice applicants for 5 licenses, 5.7% drawn
- Type 1 (any ram), residents: 66 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
- Type 2 (any ram less than), residents: 4 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price bighorn sheep licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your bighorn sheep points, and after a full-price bighorn sheep license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
