Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Bighorn Sheep Hunt Area 2
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names bighorn sheep hunt area 2 "Trout Peak". It runs to about 786 square miles, entirely in Park County. WGFD reports these bighorn sheep as the Absaroka herd unit, which also takes in bighorn sheep hunt areas 1, 3, 4, 5 and 22. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the bighorn sheep stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: North Fork, Shoshone River and Clark's Fork River
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 9 walks the line around bighorn sheep hunt area 2 corner by corner. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 14-16-20 and Wyoming Highway 120, and North Fork, Shoshone River, Clark's Fork River and Sunlight Creek. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 6 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 3.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 2s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 2 also belongs to its elk, deer, antelope, moose and mountain goat hunt areas 2. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the bighorn sheep area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Sunlight Basin
WGFD administers the Sunlight Basin Wildlife Habitat Management Area (1,410 acres) inside or across the line. Public Access Areas such as Newton Lakes (471 acres) and North Fork Shoshone River-Wapiti (49 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
Wilderness inside the line: North Absaroka Wilderness
About 42% of bighorn sheep hunt area 2 lies in the North Absaroka Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.
High ground inside the line: Trout Peak, Dead Indian Peak and Sunlight Peak
Named high points inside bighorn sheep hunt area 2 include Trout Peak at 12,239 feet, Dead Indian Peak at 12,141 feet, Sunlight Peak at 11,909 feet, The Wall at 11,558 feet and Stinkingwater Peak at 11,547 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.
Holding ground: Pat O'Hara Basin, Deweys Gateway and Huff Gulch
Below them sit Pat O'Hara Basin at 6,926 feet, Deweys Gateway at 6,889 feet, Huff Gulch at 6,862 feet, Sam Berry Meadow at 6,842 feet and Beem Gulch at 6,795 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Search Wyoming Draw OddsWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for bighorn sheep in bighorn sheep hunt area 2, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (any ram), residents: 594 first-choice applicants for 5 licenses, 0.8% drawn
- Type 1 (any ram), nonresidents: 59 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price bighorn sheep licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your bighorn sheep points, and after a full-price bighorn sheep license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
