Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Bighorn Sheep Hunt Area 12
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names bighorn sheep hunt area 12 "Porcupine". It runs to about 230 square miles, entirely in Big Horn County. WGFD reports these bighorn sheep as the Devil's Canyon herd unit, and no other hunt area shares it. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.
The line: Big Horn River, Sheep Mountain and Devils Canyon
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 9 walks the line around bighorn sheep hunt area 12 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 14A crosses the Big Horn River. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 14A, U.S.F.S. Road 11 and U.S.F.S. Road 14, and Big Horn River, Sheep Mountain and Devils Canyon. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 6 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 3.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 12s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 12 also belongs to its elk and deer hunt areas 12. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the bighorn sheep area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
High ground inside the line: Medicine Mountain, Duncum Mountain and Sheep Mountain
Named high points inside bighorn sheep hunt area 12 include Medicine Mountain at 9,954 feet, Duncum Mountain at 9,827 feet, Sheep Mountain at 9,790 feet, Cone Mountain at 9,454 feet and Mexican Hill at 8,233 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.
Holding ground: Cottonwood Canyon, Simmons Canyon and Petes Canyon
Below them sit Cottonwood Canyon at 5,308 feet, Simmons Canyon at 4,825 feet, Petes Canyon at 4,376 feet, John Blue Canyon at 3,648 feet and Wyoming Gulch at 8,996 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.
Water: Harmon Springs, Roundup Spring and Little Spring
Named water inside the line includes Harmon Springs, Roundup Spring, Little Spring, School Section Spring, Red Seep and Richs Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside bighorn sheep hunt area 12 runs from 3,648 feet to 9,954 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.

Search Wyoming Draw OddsWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for bighorn sheep in bighorn sheep hunt area 12, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (any ram), residents: 422 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 0.2% drawn
- Type 2 (any ram less than), residents: 39 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
- Type 2 (any ram less than), nonresidents: 8 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
- Type 1 (any ram), nonresidents: 1 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price bighorn sheep licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your bighorn sheep points, and after a full-price bighorn sheep license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
