Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 34
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 34 "Hunter Mesa". It runs to about 945 square miles, entirely in Johnson County. WGFD reports these moose as the Bighorn herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 1 and 42. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.
The line: Piney Creek, North Fork and Powder River
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 34 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of Piney Creek and Interstate Highway 90. On the way round it follows Interstate Highway 90, Interstate Highway 25, Johnson County Road 3 and U.S.F.S. Road 452, and Piney Creek, North Fork, Powder River and Pass Creek. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 34s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 34 also belongs to its elk, deer and antelope hunt areas 34. Only the elk area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Bud Love
WGFD administers the Bud Love Wildlife Habitat Management Area (7,888 acres) inside or across the line. Public Access Areas such as Dull Knife Reservoir (1 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
Wilderness inside the line: Cloud Peak Wilderness
About 7% of moose hunt area 34 lies in the Cloud Peak Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.
High ground inside the line: Bomber Mountain, Mather Peaks and Bighorn Peak
Named high points inside moose hunt area 34 include Bomber Mountain at 12,829 feet, Mather Peaks at 12,419 feet, Bighorn Peak at 12,316 feet, Ant Hill at 10,950 feet and Hazelton Pyramid at 10,500 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.
Holding ground: Canyon Park, Triangle Park and Soldier Park
Below them sit Canyon Park at 8,855 feet, Triangle Park at 8,795 feet, Soldier Park at 8,647 feet, Slab Park at 8,224 feet and Webber Park at 8,122 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past.
Water: Charlie Brown Spring, Dancehall Spring and Hammond Spring
Named water inside the line includes Charlie Brown Spring, Dancehall Spring, Hammond Spring, Red Spring, Mosier Springs and Cow Camp Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Moose Draw Odds
| Season | Tags | Applicants | Draw % | Pts (n/p) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Rifle — General Type 1 either sex (nonresident) | 0 | 24 | 0.0% | — |

| Rifle — General Type 4 antlerless (nonresident) | 0 | 0 | 0.0% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 34, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1, residents: 432 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
- Type 4, residents: 28 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn
WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
