Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 17
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 17 "Lower Gros Ventre-Spread Creek", though its own map layer still labels it Lower Gros Ventre - Spread Creek. It runs to about 364 square miles, entirely in Teton County. WGFD reports these moose as the Jackson herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 7, 14, 15, 18, 19, 28 and 32. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the moose stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Gros Ventre River, Buffalo River and Blackrock Creek
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 17 corner by corner. It starts where the Gros Ventre River crosses the Grand Teton National Park boundary. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 26-287 and U.S.F.S. Road 30750, and Gros Ventre River, Buffalo River, Blackrock Creek and Continental Divide. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 17s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 17 also belongs to its deer, antelope and bighorn sheep hunt areas 17. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Patrol Cabin
WGFD administers the Patrol Cabin Wildlife Habitat Management Area (160 acres) inside or across the line.
High ground inside the line: Two Ocean Mountain, Grouse Mountain and Mount Leidy
Named high points inside moose hunt area 17 include Two Ocean Mountain at 10,610 feet, Grouse Mountain at 10,310 feet, Mount Leidy at 10,293 feet, East Leidy at 10,105 feet and Tripod Peak at 9,933 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.
Holding ground: Dry Gulch, Blackrock Meadows and McMichael Draw
Below them sit Dry Gulch at 8,896 feet, Blackrock Meadows at 8,656 feet, McMichael Draw at 8,306 feet, Preacher Park at 8,178 feet and Skull Creek Meadows at 8,128 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.
Water: Antelope Spring
Named water inside the line includes Antelope Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Reading the land status
Named ground inside moose hunt area 17 runs from 7,313 feet to 10,610 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Two Ocean Mountain (10,610 ft), Grouse Mountain (10,310 ft), Mount Leidy (10,293 ft), East Leidy (10,105 ft)
Holding ground: Pia Tsiambe Basin (9,409 ft), Gunsight Pass (9,240 ft), Moccasin Basin (9,186 ft), Patrol Cabin WHMA, Antelope Spring
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

Moose Success Rates
WGFD's 2025 harvest report carries no moose row we can read back to moose hunt area 17 on its own, so no figure is given here — a statewide average printed under this heading would look measured and would not be. WGFD's harvest reports page has the full tables.
Moose Draw Odds
| Season | Tags | Applicants | Draw % | Pts (n/p) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rifle — General Type 1 antlered (resident) | 1 | 87 | 1.1% | — |
| Rifle — General Type 1 antlered (nonresident) | 0 | 6 | 0.0% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineWyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 17, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:
- Type 1 (antlered moose), residents: 87 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 1.1% drawn
WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
