Where to Find Moose in Moose Hunt Area 11

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names moose hunt area 11 "Absaroka", though its own map layer still labels it North Fork. It runs to about 2,682 square miles, entirely in Park County. WGFD reports these moose as the Absaroka herd unit, which also takes in moose hunt areas 8 and 9. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the moose live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: Clark's Fork River, Shoshone River and Dry Creek

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 8 walks the line around moose hunt area 11 corner by corner. On the way round it follows Wyoming Highway 120, and Clark's Fork River, Shoshone River, Dry Creek and Soda Butte Creek. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 11s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 11 also belongs to its elk, deer and antelope hunt areas 11. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the moose area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Sunlight Basin

WGFD administers the Sunlight Basin Wildlife Habitat Management Area (1,410 acres) inside or across the line. Public Access Areas such as South Fork Shoshone River-Andy Martin Hill (29 acres) and South Fork Shoshone River-Cody Canal (72 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

Wilderness inside the line: Washakie Wilderness and North Absaroka Wilderness

About 23% of moose hunt area 11 lies in the Washakie Wilderness, 20% of moose hunt area 11 lies in the North Absaroka Wilderness and 2% of moose hunt area 11 lies in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Trout Peak, Red Tops and Dead Indian Peak

Named high points inside moose hunt area 11 include Trout Peak at 12,239 feet, Red Tops at 12,157 feet, Dead Indian Peak at 12,141 feet, Needle Mountain at 12,107 feet and Wapiti Ridge at 12,049 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.

Holding ground: Hughes Basin, Silvertip Basin and Beartooth Plateau

Below them sit Hughes Basin at 10,060 feet, Silvertip Basin at 9,917 feet, Beartooth Plateau at 9,815 feet, Hidden Basin at 9,730 feet and Sawtooth Meadows at 9,464 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

These are WGFD's own estimates from its hunter survey, for this hunt area and season only — not a statewide average. One season isn't a trend, so check the current report before you read one into it.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for moose in moose hunt area 11, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (antlered moose), residents: 407 first-choice applicants for 1 license, 0.2% drawn
  • Type 1 (antlered moose), nonresidents: 13 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

WGFD draws full-price moose licenses partly on preference points, for residents and nonresidents alike, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19); the figures above are from its random draw. Drawing a full-price license deletes your moose points, and after an any or antlered moose license from the initial drawing you may not apply for one again. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
