Where to Find Mule Deer in Deer Hunt Area 112

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names deer hunt area 112 "Ishawooa". It runs to about 227 square miles, entirely in Park County. WGFD reports these mule deer as the Upper Shoshone herd unit, which also takes in deer hunt areas 110, 111, 113, 114, 115 and 148. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the mule deer live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

The line: South Fork, Shoshone River and Fall Creek

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 6 defines deer hunt area 112 as all of the north and west drainage of the South Fork of the Shoshone River up to the drainage of Fall Creek. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 7 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 112s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 112 also belongs to its antelope hunt area 112. None of it shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the deer area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Public Access Areas

Public Access Areas such as South Fork Shoshone River-Andy Martin Hill (29 acres) and South Fork Shoshone River-Cody Canal (72 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

Wilderness inside the line: Washakie Wilderness

About 56% of deer hunt area 112 lies in the Washakie Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.

High ground inside the line: Wapiti Ridge, Citadel Mountain and Horses Head

Named high points inside deer hunt area 112 include Wapiti Ridge at 12,049 feet, Citadel Mountain at 11,904 feet, Horses Head at 11,012 feet, Kingfisher Peak at 10,974 feet and Ishawooa Mesa at 10,720 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Mule deer bed on broken ground with a view and feed on the brush below it.

Holding ground: Spruce Meadow and Cut Coulee

Below them sit Spruce Meadow at 8,280 feet and Cut Coulee at 7,425 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside deer hunt area 112 runs from 6,039 feet to 12,049 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for mule deer in deer hunt area 112, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1, residents: 326 first-choice applicants for 20 licenses, 6.1% drawn
  • Type 3, residents: 75 first-choice applicants for 60 licenses, 80% drawn
  • Type 1, nonresidents: 10 first-choice applicants for 0 licenses, 0% drawn

Wyoming residents draw mule deer licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw. WGFD publishes no preference-point level at which a hunt draws, so none is given here. Every figure was checked against WGFD's demand-report PDFs on 2026-08-10.
