Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 92

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 92 "Steamboat". It runs to about 1,343 square miles, almost all of it in Sweetwater County. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Sublette herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91 and 93 and 3 more. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the pronghorn live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

Where antelope hunt area 92 begins and ends

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 92 corner by corner. It starts at the junction of Interstate Highway 80 and U.S. Highway 191 in the city of Rock Springs. On the way round it follows Interstate Highway 80, U.S. Highway 191, U.S. Highway 28 and Sweetwater County Road 74, and Rock Springs. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 92s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 92 also belongs to its elk and deer hunt areas 92. Only the deer area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

High ground inside the line: Steamboat Mountain, Oregon Buttes and South Table Mountain

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 92 include Steamboat Mountain at 8,672 feet, Oregon Buttes at 8,616 feet, South Table Mountain at 8,281 feet, Essex Mountain at 8,044 feet and Cabin Butte at 7,981 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Holding ground: Blind Canyon, Split Rock Canyon and Johnson Canyon

Below them sit Blind Canyon at 7,361 feet, Split Rock Canyon at 7,322 feet, Johnson Canyon at 7,288 feet, Mowing Machine Draw at 7,175 feet and LaFonte Canyon at 7,147 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.

Water: UP Spring, Marine Spring and Fifteenmile Spring

Named water inside the line includes UP Spring, Marine Spring, Fifteenmile Spring, Minnie Spring, Ox Yoke Springs and Indian Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside antelope hunt area 92 runs from 6,412 feet to 8,672 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 92, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 1,025 first-choice applicants for 170 licenses, 16.6% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 263 first-choice applicants for 5 licenses, 1.9% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw.
