Where to Find Pronghorn in Antelope Hunt Area 6

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names antelope hunt area 6 "South Newcastle". It runs to about 626 square miles, entirely in Weston County. WGFD reports these pronghorn as the Black Thunder herd unit, which also takes in antelope hunt areas 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 24, 27 and 29. WGFD prints the line and counts the harvest. It doesn't say where inside the line the pronghorn live, so that part is our read of the ground, labelled as such.

Where antelope hunt area 6 begins and ends

WGFD's 2026 Chapter 5 walks the line around antelope hunt area 6 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 16 intersects the Wyoming-South Dakota state line. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 16, Weston County Road 2, U.S. Highway 85 and Weston County Road 54, and Cheyenne River. It is the description your license is good inside, so it is worth reading once in full before you go. The full text is in Section 5 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.

Not the same ground as the other hunt area 6s

WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 6 also belongs to its elk, deer, moose and bighorn sheep hunt areas 6. Only the deer area shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the antelope area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.

Ground WGFD opens: Public Access Areas

Public Access Areas such as Black Elk Pond (2 acres) are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.

High ground inside the line: Alkali Butte and Wyoming Hill

Named high points inside antelope hunt area 6 include Alkali Butte at 4,457 feet and Wyoming Hill at 3,835 feet. None of them carries a public-land flag we trust, so settle ownership before you plan to stand on one. Pronghorn live in the open and trust their eyes, which is the whole problem.

Holding ground: Fields Draw, Fawcett Draw and Morris Draw

Below them sit Fields Draw at 4,175 feet, Fawcett Draw at 4,162 feet, Morris Draw at 4,148 feet, Statler Draw at 4,146 feet and School Draw at 4,145 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.

Water: Ferguson Spring, Mix Spring and Slate Spring

Named water inside the line includes Ferguson Spring, Mix Spring and Slate Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

Reading the land status

Named ground inside antelope hunt area 6 runs from 3,835 feet to 4,457 feet. Those are the heights of the features GNIS names, which bound the range from inside rather than measure it.

Wyoming Game and Fish's 2026 demand report for pronghorn in antelope hunt area 6, residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different license pools:

  • Type 1 (any antelope), nonresidents: 151 first-choice applicants for 5 licenses, 3.3% drawn
  • Type 1 (any antelope), residents: 102 first-choice applicants for 138 licenses, 100% drawn

Wyoming residents draw pronghorn licenses without preference points; nonresidents draw part of their quota on points, highest balance first (Chapter 44, Section 19), and the nonresident figures above are from WGFD's random draw.
