Where to Find Elk in Elk Hunt Area 90
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names elk hunt area 90 "Upper Greys River". It runs to about 221 square miles, entirely in Lincoln County. WGFD reports these elk as the Afton herd unit, which also takes in elk hunt areas 88, 89 and 91. What WGFD publishes for the area is its boundary and its harvest; where the elk stand inside it is our reading of the ground, and the two are kept apart below.
The line: Blind Bull Creek, Greys River and Green River
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 7 walks the line around elk hunt area 90 corner by corner. It starts at the point where Blind Bull Creek runs into the Greys River. On the way round it follows Blind Bull Creek, Greys River, Green River and Smith Fork Creek. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 9 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 90s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 90 also belongs to its deer and antelope hunt areas 90. None of them shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the elk area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
High ground inside the line: Mount Coffin, Mount Fitzpatrick and Mount McDougal
Named high points inside elk hunt area 90 include Mount Coffin at 11,229 feet, Mount Fitzpatrick at 10,843 feet, Mount McDougal at 10,765 feet and Cabin Creek Peak at 10,232 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Elk want timber to bed in and open ground to feed on, within a short walk of each other.
Holding ground: Young Canyon, Black Canyon and Lunch Creek Meadows
Below them sit Young Canyon at 6,868 feet, Black Canyon at 6,831 feet, Lunch Creek Meadows at 9,632 feet, Box Canyon Pass at 9,630 feet and Tri Basin Divide at 8,686 feet. Those are the basins and bottoms of the area, and they are what you glass into from above.
Water: Spring Creek Falls and Shot Hole Spring
Named water inside the line includes Spring Creek Falls and Shot Hole Spring. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Reading the land status
Federal land — BLM, Forest Service and Park Service — covers about 100% of elk hunt area 90 in our read of the federal land-status layer; state trust land isn't counted in that figure. Our ownership read for this hunt area is approximate — it comes out as Private / Other 100%, so treat it as a starting point and check a current land-status layer before you plan a route. The hunt area runs from 7,285 feet to 9,966 feet, averaging 8,649 — enough relief to separate summer range from winter range.

The lay of it
- 7,285–9,966 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 8,649 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 220.9 sq mi inside the boundary.
Who owns the ground
- Private / Other — 100%
Roughly 0% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 178 tanks
- 4 springs
- 536 stream segments
- 18 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
