Where to Find Elk in Elk Hunt Area 69
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission names elk hunt area 69 "Whiskey Mountain". It runs to about 332 square miles, entirely in Fremont County. WGFD reports these elk as the Wiggins Fork herd unit, which also takes in elk hunt areas 67, 68 and 127. The boundary and the harvest figures are WGFD's. The read of the country inside them is ours, and it says so where it starts.
The line: Wind River, Continental Divide and Jakey's Fork Creek
WGFD's 2026 Chapter 7 walks the line around elk hunt area 69 corner by corner. It starts where U.S. Highway 287 crosses the west boundary of the Wind River Reservation. On the way round it follows U.S. Highway 287, and Wind River, Continental Divide and Jakey's Fork Creek. Read it as the legal edge of your license rather than as a hint about animals. The full text is in Section 9 of that chapter, with this year's season dates and license limitations in Section 2.
Not the same ground as the other hunt area 69s
WGFD numbers each species' hunt areas on its own grid, so the number 69 also belongs to its antelope hunt area 69. None of it shares a county with this one. A license is good only in the hunt area of its own species, so this page is about the elk area, and the cards at the foot of the page link the others.
Ground WGFD opens: Whiskey Basin
WGFD administers the Whiskey Basin Wildlife Habitat Management Area (12,833 acres) inside or across the line. Public Access Areas such as Wind River-Jakey's Fork and Wind River-South Parker are public ways onto water and land; check what each allows before you count on it for hunting.
Wilderness inside the line: Fitzpatrick Wilderness
About 89% of elk hunt area 69 lies in the Fitzpatrick Wilderness. WGFD's 2026 regulations print the rule that matters there: no nonresident may hunt big game in a designated wilderness area unless accompanied by a licensed professional guide or a resident guide, with at least one guide for every two nonresident hunters. Inside the wilderness there are no roads, so every animal there comes out on your back or on a horse.
High ground inside the line: Gannett Peak, Mount Warren and Turret Peak
Named high points inside elk hunt area 69 include Gannett Peak at 13,788 feet, Mount Warren at 13,694 feet, Turret Peak at 13,552 feet, Doublet Peak at 13,550 feet and Jackson Peak at 13,508 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Elk want timber to bed in and open ground to feed on, within a short walk of each other.
Holding ground: Ram Flat, Goat Flat and Indian Pass
Below them sit Ram Flat at 12,224 feet, Goat Flat at 12,202 feet, Indian Pass at 12,145 feet, No Mans Pass at 12,093 feet and Indian Pass at 11,713 feet. That is the low ground — where animals drop when they are pushed or when the weather turns.
Water: Bomber Falls
Named water inside the line includes Bomber Falls. Nothing in the data says which of it runs in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.
Unit 069 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up · figures are for GMU 69
The lay of it
- 7,558–12,317 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 10,400 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
- 331.8 sq mi inside the boundary.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 522 tanks
- 414 stream segments
- 132 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Gannett Peak (13,788 ft), Mount Warren (13,694 ft), Jackson Peak (13,508 ft), Mount Sacagawea (13,483 ft)
Holding ground: Glacier Pass (12,956 ft), Blaurock Pass (12,760 ft), Ram Flat (12,224 ft), Whiskey Basin WHMA
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
