Deer Hunt Area NE-03 (Northeast 03)
Oregon Hunting Guide — Deer (Buck), Deer (Antlerless)
Northeast 03 is the Sled Springs WMU, running from Wallowa and Elgin north along the Grande Ronde to the state line. Public land is thin, so the hunt is as much about access as about finding a buck.

Where to Find Deer in the Northeast 03 Hunt Area: Sled Springs buttes and the Grande Ronde
Sled Springs from Wallowa to the state line
The boundary follows Hwy 82 from Wallowa to Elgin, runs northeast along the Grande Ronde River to the state line, then comes back along Joseph Creek, Chesnimnus Creek and Crow Creek Road. Elk Mountain tops the area, with Wayne Butte, Roberts Butte, Akers Butte and Wood Butte next. Public parcels are small, and ODFW's maps point to Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, Vale BLM and ODF lands.
No logistics record is attached to this hunt area, so the boundary itself is your best guide to where the roads run.
Two deer on the same ground
ODFW's forecast puts mule deer well below objective with moderate recruitment, and calls whitetail numbers good in all units. This hunt area has a mule deer buck hunt and a whitetail buck hunt, plus bow and muzzleloader hunts. Look at where creek bottoms meet the benches and the butte flanks, since both species work that seam.
Elgin and Wallowa are the towns on the edges. Because ownership is scattered, a good map and a phone call matter more than a good pair of boots. Find the public parcel first, then work out how deer use it from the nearest road.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
ODFW's Deer Hunt Area NE-03 covers about 882 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 21% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Sled Springs (about 100%). Named features inside the line fall in Wallowa County and Union County. Elevation runs from about 1,485 to 5,127 feet. The highest named points are Elk Mountain (5,127 ft), Wayne Butte (4,890 ft) and Roberts Butte (4,603 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit NE-03 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 2,442–4,578 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 3,746 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 882.3 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 32%
Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 46 tanks
- 1 springs
- 248 stream segments
- 18 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Wayne Butte (4,890 ft), Starvation Ridge (4,869 ft), Miller Ridge (4,846 ft), Hidden Ridge (4,699 ft)
Holding ground: Gould Gulch (3,678 ft), Simmons Draw (3,600 ft), Nells Canyon (3,362 ft), Ferguson Spring, Summit Spring
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
How to Hunt Deer in the Northeast 03 Hunt Area: map your access before the opener
Work out the ownership first
Most of this hunt area is private, with public ground in pieces. Study the Wallowa-Whitman, BLM and ODF maps ODFW points to, then pin down which roads actually reach those parcels. Where public land is landlocked, you'll need a landowner's yes. Ask early and ask politely.
Once you're in, hunt it hard. Pressure funnels to the few open acres, and deer learn quickly.
Dry-year deer stay near feed and water
ODFW expects dry conditions at the start of the season, which pushes deer toward better forage and water. Its forecast tells hunters to look in north-facing drainages, where feed lasts longer than on the south slopes. For whitetail bucks, sit between bedding and feeding areas and be patient, since the forecast calls them nocturnal. Mule deer bucks often stand and look back when jumped, so keep a rest ready. Glass the benches at first light, and pack out in quarters if you drop one on a steep bank.
Carry a rangefinder. Open benches make shots look closer than they are.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers
ODFW has no harvest figures on the new hunt areas yet. Its 2025 statistics are by WMU, for all deer hunters, every season and tag type, so these are the units this area was drawn from, and each covers more or less ground than the area does.
- Sled springs (about 100% of this area): 1,141 hunters, 526 animals, 46% success over 5,022 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day
Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.
Legal shooting hours
Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
Motorized retrieval
Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.
Tagging
Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.
Leaving meat
Wasting edible meat is illegal.
Where you may not shoot
- Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.
Deer (Buck): where to put the shot
Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.
Shots to refuse
- Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
- Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
- Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.
Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.
Deer (Buck) Success Rates
Unit 57: 526 of 1,141 hunters, 46%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.
