Where to Find Bucks in the Keno 01 Hunt Area: the Green Diamond ground south of Highway 66

Keno unit, start to finish

The whole area is the Keno unit. ODFW's boundary leaves Klamath Falls on US 97, follows the state line west to Copco Road, runs north on Copco to Highway 66, then follows the Jackson-Klamath county line and Dead Indian Road. It continues through Highway 140, Fourmile Lake and the Pacific Crest Trail to Crater Lake National Park and returns by Highway 62. Aspen Butte, Pelican Butte, Mount Harriman, Mount Carmine and Crater Mountain are the named high points. Less than half is public.

What the forecast says

ODFW states plainly that KE-01 hunters will find the highest concentration of deer in the Green Diamond Oregon Timberlands area south of Highway 66. Overall, Klamath County's deer are stable, with buck ratios above objective in KB-01 and KB-02 next door. The forecast gives no ratio for Keno itself, so the Green Diamond note is the best local lead. Klamath Falls, Altamont, Chiloquin and Dorris are the closest towns, and the Keno Access Road, OR 62, US 97 and Copco Road are the named routes. The southern part of the area drops toward the California line, so expect a long vertical range.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's Deer Hunt Area KE-01 covers about 1,041 square miles measured on ODFW's own polygon, and ODFW rates it 41% public land. It takes in parts of these WMUs: Keno (about 100%). Named features inside the line fall in Klamath County. Elevation runs from about 3,100 to 8,173 feet. The highest named points are Aspen Butte (8,173 ft), Pelican Butte (8,008 ft) and Mount Harriman (7,975 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit KE-01 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,085–6,283 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,676 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,041.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 17%

Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 361 tanks
  • 1 springs
  • 2,208 stream segments
  • 54 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Aspen Butte (8,173 ft), Pelican Butte (8,008 ft), Mount Harriman (7,975 ft), Crater Mountain (7,748 ft)

Holding ground: South Pass (6,620 ft), Oregon Desert (6,065 ft), Randolph Flats (4,422 ft), Indian Spring, Onion Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Bucks in the Keno 01 Hunt Area: forage beside cover, and a dry-year clock

Hunting the Green Diamond lead

Confirm access first. Green Diamond ground has its own rules, so check the landowner's current access policy before you plan a hunt. Once you're in, ODFW's advice for Klamath County applies: concentrate on areas with healthy understory or thinned stands that offer forage next to cover, especially when it's hot and dry.

Water, closures and gear

Without rain, expect deer to be more nocturnal and to stay within a few miles of water, including dried seasonal creeks. Glass at first and last light and move quietly between. ODFW rates fire danger extreme, so check Forest Service, BLM and private landowner closure pages and bring a stove instead of planning a campfire. Odessa Campground, Topsy Campground, Harriman and Water Wheel Campground are listed camps, with Klamath Falls, Altamont, Chiloquin and Dorris nearby. Two bow tags, a rifle tag and a youth tag cover this area, so pick the weapon that fits the cover you find. Pack a game bag and plan for hot-weather meat care.

The 2025 harvest in ODFW's numbers

ODFW has no harvest figures on the new hunt areas yet. Its 2025 statistics are by WMU, for all deer hunters, every season and tag type, so these are the units this area was drawn from, and each covers more or less ground than the area does.

  • Keno (about 100% of this area): 573 hunters, 189 animals, 33% success over 3,008 hunter days.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Deer (Buck): where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.

Deer (Buck) Success Rates

Unit 31: 189 of 573 hunters, 33%. Figures are ODFW's own 2025 harvest statistics, by WMU, because the new hunt areas have no history yet.

ODFW's eastern deer hunts carry new numbers from 2026, so the regulations list them as NEW, with no applicant history to quote. Treat any older WMU draw figures as a different hunt.
