Where to Find Mountain Goats in the Elkhorn Hunt: Rock Creek Butte and the 8900-foot summits
The named summits
Elkhorn takes its name from the mountains it covers. Rock Creek Butte is the highest at 9077 feet, followed by Elkhorn Peak at 8929, the Elkhorn Mountains at 8903, Red Mountain at 8903 and Twin Mountain at 8887. Goats live on the steep, broken faces beneath summits like these, so those are the places to study on a topographic map.
Read the hunt description first
ODFW opens all of Units 50 and 51 to this tag, so you've got a lot of rock to sort through. Read the current regulations before you scout. The hunt is run as three separate hunts, one after another, and each has only a few tags. Many hunters will draw this tag only once, so give the scouting the time it deserves. The lowest named ground sits far below the peaks, so most of your scouting time belongs on the faces and basins around the summits. Study the topographic map for cliff bands before you pick a trailhead, and plan your approaches in daylight, since the terrain is rough.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
ODFW publishes no boundary polygon for its goat hunts, so the map shows the whole of Units 50 and 51, about 2,193 square miles. Named features inside the line fall in Baker County, Grant County and Malheur County. The highest named points are Rock Creek Butte (9,077 ft), Elkhorn Peak (8,929 ft) and Elkhorn Mountains (8,903 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
