Pronghorn Hunting in Unit 75

Where to Find Pronghorn in the Interstate Unit: Gerber Reservoir, Willow Valley and the private ranches east of the county line
Pronghorn live on private ground
ODFW's hunt description for the east side says plainly that pronghorn exist primarily on private land within this hunt area. That's the part of Unit 75 east of the Klamath-Lake county line, and public land there is about three-fifths. Don't plan a public-land hunt and expect animals. Plan to ask permission, and spend time before the season finding which ranches have pronghorn and which are open to hunters.
The line and the landmarks
The boundary starts at Bly, runs west on Highway 140 to Beatty, then north on Godowa Springs Road and along the Sprague and Sycan rivers to Forest Roads 30, 28 and 29. It continues to Highway 31, southeast to Valley Falls, south on US 395 to the state line, west to the Lost River and north to Bly. Willow Valley Road, Forest Road 3752 and Highway 31 are the main roads. Gerber North and South campgrounds sit on the reservoir. The east part of the hunt, east of the Klamath-Lake county line, is the area ODFW calls out. Another description reaches into Units 33 and 32 near Merrill and the Sycan River, so confirm which piece your tag covers. Lakeview, Paisley, Valley Falls and Bonanza are the named towns.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Interstate Unit, WMU 75, covers about 2,192 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 56% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Lake County and Klamath County. Elevation runs from about 4,226 to 8,356 feet. The highest named points are Gearhart Mountain (8,356 ft), Cougar Peak (7,912 ft) and Slide Mountain (7,763 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 75 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,344–7,152 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,532 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 2,188.4 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 32%
Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 738 tanks
- 3 springs
- 5,497 stream segments
- 96 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Gearhart Mountain (8,356 ft), Cougar Peak (7,912 ft), Slide Mountain (7,763 ft), Grizzly Peak (7,762 ft)
Holding ground: Government Harvey Pass (7,090 ft), Round Pass (6,797 ft), Myers Meadow (6,717 ft), Mud Spring, Hotchkiss Springs
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
