Where to Find Pronghorn in the Owyhee Unit: Jordan Valley to Harper

One large unit, mostly public

This hunt is the whole Owyhee unit. ODFW's line starts at Nyssa, goes south on the Oregon-Idaho state line to the Jordan Valley-Silver City road, west to Jordan Valley and southwest on US 95 to Highway 78. It then goes northwest to Follyfarm, northeast to Harper, and east on Highway 20 and 20/26 back to Nyssa. Most of the ground is public. That gives you room, but also miles of road between spots.

Mountains in a low desert

Mahogany Mountain, Spring Mountain, Cedar Mountain, Freezeout Mountain and Saddle Butte are the named high points. The unit drops to roughly 2,184 feet. Roads like Crowley Road, the Crowley-Riverside road, Danner Loop Road and Highway 78 cut across it. Slocum Creek Campground, Birch Creek Historic Ranch and the Jordan Craters area are the named places to camp. Expect long, open ground and mostly BLM land, with pronghorn spread over large country. Jordan Valley, Adrian, Homedale and Marsing are the named towns on the map, and Jordan Valley sits at the south end. Crowley Road and Highway 78 are the main routes connecting the places you'll want to scout. Count on a lot of driving between glassing stops and a lot of gravel.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

The Owyhee Unit, WMU 67, covers about 3,019 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 82% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Malheur County. Elevation runs from about 2,184 to 6,517 feet. The highest named points are Mahogany Mountain (6,517 ft), Spring Mountain (6,003 ft) and Cedar Mountain (5,570 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 67 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 2,582–4,780 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 3,958 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 3,017.4 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 77%

Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 650 tanks
  • 9 springs
  • 154 stream segments
  • 42 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Spring Mountain (6,003 ft), Cedar Mountain (5,570 ft), Grassy Ridge (5,530 ft), Freezeout Mountain (5,482 ft)

Holding ground: Spring Creek Meadow (5,490 ft), Old Maids Basin (5,401 ft), Cook Stove Basin (5,141 ft), Cold Spring, Upper McCain Springs

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
