Elk Hunting in Unit 64

Lookout Mountain is Baker County elk ground along I-84 and the Snake River, from Hwy 86 to Farewell Bend. ODFW says herds are growing, and 2026 offers several rifle hunts for bulls, cows and either.

Where to Find Elk in the Lookout Mountain Unit: Hwy 86 to Farewell Bend

A compact box on the Snake

ODFW's boundary begins at the junction of I-84 and Hwy 86 northeast of Baker. It runs east on Hwy 86 to the Powder River near Goose Creek, follows the Powder to the Snake River, turns southwest along the Snake to Birch Creek at Farewell Bend, and returns northwest on I-84. The named summits are Big Lookout Mountain at 7087 ft, Little Lookout Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain, Sheep Mountain and Lone Pine Mountain, and the named range starts at 2075 ft.

Herd and access

ODFW's forecast says Baker County elk came out of winter in good shape. It says bull and calf ratios are good, and it lists Lookout Mountain among the units where elk continue to grow. Public land is a minority of the unit, so private ground figures into the hunt. Richland, Halfway, Huntington and Baker City are the nearest towns, and I-84, US 30, the Snake River Road and OR 86 are the named roads. The Vale BLM and ODF maps cover the unit, so use them to separate public and private parcels.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

The Lookout Mtn Unit, WMU 64, covers about 555 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 38% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Baker County. Elevation runs from about 2,075 to 7,087 feet. The highest named points are Big Lookout Mountain (7,087 ft), Little Lookout Mountain (6,675 ft) and Sugarloaf Mountain (6,093 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 64 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 2,307–5,134 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 3,844 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 554.7 sq mi inside the boundary.

Who owns the ground

  • Private / Other — 100%

Roughly 0% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 10 tanks
  • 2 springs
  • 67 stream segments
  • 8 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Big Lookout Mountain (7,087 ft), Little Lookout Mountain (6,675 ft), Morgan Mountain (5,047 ft), Gold Hill (4,137 ft)

Holding ground: Sawmill Basin (4,993 ft), Dean Pass (4,221 ft), Upper Peavine Flat (3,404 ft), Overhead Flat Spring, Montezuma Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
