Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in the Warner Unit: Crane Mountain, Drake Peak and the Warner Mountains
The whole unit is the hunt
Unlike many sheep hunts, this one isn't cut from part of a unit. ODFW's hunt description covers all of the Warner wildlife unit, in Lake County. That makes the legal line simple: if you're inside the unit, you're in the hunt. Confirm the unit's boundary on the regulations map before you scout, since a map is the only source for where it begins and ends.
The high peaks
Crane Mountain, at 8,444 feet, is the top named point, followed by Drake Peak at 8,381, Light Peak at 8,322 and Twelvemile Peak at 8,128. Crook Peak is just under 7,800 feet. The named range starts around 4,765 feet. That's a lot of vertical rise, and sheep country is rock, ledges and steep grass faces. Start your scouting on the biggest relief and the steepest rock, then work outward to the lower benches. Lake County is the only county named. ODFW doesn't give a public-land share or a boundary walk for this hunt, so use the unit boundary in the regulations and confirm access before you drive in. Plan scouting trips around forest road conditions, since they vary through the year, and carry a good topo map for the upper slopes. The Warner Mountains run long and steep, so pick one stretch of them and learn it well.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
ODFW's boundary for this hunt covers about 921 square miles. Named features inside the line fall in Lake County. Elevation runs from about 4,765 to 8,444 feet. The highest named points are Crane Mountain (8,444 ft), Drake Peak (8,381 ft) and Light Peak (8,322 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 574 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,861–6,616 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,848 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 920.9 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 648 tanks
- 4 springs
- 2,807 stream segments
- 48 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
