Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in the Coleman and East Guano Unit: the BLM roads west of the refuges

The legal line in words

This hunt is the part of Unit 70, excluding Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge and Sheldon National Antelope Refuge, lying west of a pair of roads. The line starts at Hwy 140 at the Nevada-Oregon border and runs north on BLM Road 6176-0-00 to BLM Road 8249-0-00. It then goes north on 8249-0-00 to the unit boundary.

The refuges are excluded, so don't plan to hunt inside them. Check the map and the hunt description before you go.

Buttes, hills and open range

Named points include Lone Grave Butte at over sixty-five hundred feet, Little Juniper Mountain, Cox Butte and the Red Hills. The unit's low ground is above forty-four hundred feet.

That's high desert, open and rugged, in Lake and Harney counties. Look for rimrock, broken slopes and the sides of buttes. ODFW's forecast gives nothing for this herd, so base your scouting on the terrain and talk to the local office.

Use the BLM roads named in the boundary as reference points. They're long, rough, and not always maintained.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's boundary for this hunt covers about 617 square miles. Named features inside the line fall in Lake County and Harney County. Elevation runs from about 4,478 to 6,566 feet. The highest named points are Lone Grave Butte (6,566 ft), Little Juniper Mountain (6,309 ft) and Cox Butte (5,310 ft). ODFW's description reads: "That portion of Unit 70, excluding Hart Mountain NAR and Sheldon NAR lying west of the following Rds. Starting at Hwy 140 at the Nevada – Oregon border, north on BLM road 6176-0-00 to BLM Road 8249-0-00, north on 8249-0-00 to the unit boundary." ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 570C terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 4,485–6,064 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,258 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 617.1 sq mi inside the boundary.

Who owns the ground

  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 77%

Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 536 tanks
  • 698 stream segments
  • 115 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Lone Grave Butte (6,566 ft), Little Juniper Mountain (6,309 ft), Shirk Rim (5,836 ft), Cox Butte (5,310 ft)

Holding ground: Wildlife Lake (6,034 ft), Gibson Lake (6,027 ft), Corral Lake (5,869 ft), Hogback Well

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.

How to Hunt Bighorn Sheep in the Coleman and East Guano Unit: a self-supported desert hunt

Prepare for remote ground

This is a remote hunt, far from services. Bring a full-size spare, extra fuel and food and water for several days. A satellite communicator is worth the cost. Plan your route on paper as well as on a phone.

Roads here can become impassable after rain, so check conditions before you leave.

Glass, wait and stalk

The method is classic sheep hunting. Pick a vantage point, glass for hours and let animals show themselves. A spotting scope is your main tool. Look at the faces of buttes and along rock bands, and watch for animals moving at dawn and dusk.

Once you find one, plan a stalk that uses terrain and wind. Don't hurry. A single hunt window in late summer means heat, so plan your day around cool hours.

This tag is a once-in-a-lifetime style draw, so make the time count. If you take a ram, take care of the cape and horns, bone the meat and bag it. Cool it quickly and get it out with a partner's help.

Stay out of the refuges, and carry a map showing the boundary. Print it, because the signal that shows your position on a phone often drops out on these long BLM roads. Check your fuel before you turn off the pavement.

Oregon rules that decide your day

Summarised from ODFW regulations. They change — read the current regulations and your permit-tag before you hunt.

Legal shooting hours

Big game may be taken from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Motorized retrieval

Oregon has no general off-road retrieval allowance; several travel-management areas close roads during hunting season.

Tagging

Validate the tag and attach it to the carcass before leaving the kill site.

Leaving meat

Wasting edible meat is illegal.

Where you may not shoot

  • Occupied structures — No shooting from or across a public road, and no shooting within range of an occupied dwelling without permission.

Bighorn Sheep: where to put the shot

Broadside or quartering away, on the back edge of the front leg about a third of the way up the body.

Shots to refuse

  • Nothing behind or overlapping the animal you picked.
  • Your maximum range is the farthest you have shot a three-shot group into a paper plate from the rest you are carrying.
  • Pass the shot you are talking yourself into.

Plan the carry: roughly 40– 120 lb of boned-out meat, before head and hide — two large coolers. ProHunt planning estimate, not an agency figure.
