Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in the East Beatys Butte / Alvord Peaks Unit: Pueblo Mountain and the Alvord country
A hunt built from three units
This isn't a standard wildlife management unit. ODFW describes the hunt as those parts of Units 68, 69 and 70 inside a long boundary that starts in Unit 68 at the intersection of Wildhorse Creek and the East Steens County Road. It then runs south on Forest Road 44 to Lone Pine and southeast along the Sprague River to Godowa Springs Road. Check the full written line in the regulations before you scout. A ram on the wrong side of it doesn't count.
The big mountains and the low ground
Pueblo Mountain, at 8,615 feet, is the high point. Hawks Mountain, Alvord Peak, The Peaks and Acty Mountain all top 7,000 feet. The named range starts around 4,027 feet. That's a lot of vertical rock in a very big area, and ODFW lists most of it as public land. Two hunts split the season. Walk the base of these mountains and look high for rock bands, then follow the gullies down. The only county is Harney, and ODFW lists the ground as mostly public. Hawks Mountain, Alvord Peak and Acty Mountain are all named summits worth putting on your scouting list, because sheep use the rock faces below a summit more than the top itself.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
ODFW's boundary for this hunt covers about 1,597 square miles, 85% of it public land by ODFW's count. Named features inside the line fall in Harney County. Elevation runs from about 4,027 to 8,615 feet. The highest named points are Pueblo Mountain (8,615 ft), Hawks Mountain (7,229 ft) and Alvord Peak (7,091 ft). ODFW's description reads: "85% public lands. Those parts of units 68, 69, and 70 as follows: In Unit 68 beginning at the intersection of Wildhorse Cr and East Steens Co Rd (unit boundary); south south on NF44 to Lone Pine; southeast on the Sprague River to Godowa Springs Rd; south" ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 570B terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,027–6,405 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,951 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,597.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 77%
Roughly 23% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 63 tanks
- 136 springs
- 257 stream segments
- 9 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Pueblo Mountain (8,615 ft), Eusabio Ridge (7,366 ft), Hawks Mountain (7,229 ft), Alvord Peak (7,091 ft)
Holding ground: Ten Cent Meadows (6,958 ft), Penland Meadow (6,872 ft), Oleachea Pass (6,746 ft)
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
