Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in the Bear Creek Unit: west of Lostine River Road

A legal line, not a mapped unit

ODFW doesn't publish a polygon for Bear Creek. The hunt is that part of Unit 60 west of Lostine River Road and the trails that run to Frazier Pass on the Unit 60 boundary. Read that line on a map before you do anything else. Everything inside it is public land, and the relief is huge. Elkhorn Peak reaches 9165 ft, Glacier Mountain 9157 ft, Brown Mountain 8903 ft, Lookout Mountain 8804 ft and China Cap 8643 ft. The named elevations start down at 2588 ft, so you're working a long vertical gradient rather than one basin.

Frazier Pass marks the edge of the hunt

Frazier Pass sits on the Unit 60 boundary and closes the hunt on that side. A ram across the line isn't legal, however good he looks. Put the road, the trails and the pass on your GPS before you leave the truck, and carry the hunt description in your pack. ODFW's forecast has nothing specific on this herd, so the scouting is yours to do. A call to the local district office before the season is cheap, and it's the only way to get current sightings.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's boundary for this hunt covers about 417 square miles, 100% of it public land by ODFW's count. Named features inside the line fall in Wallowa County and Union County. Elevation runs from about 2,588 to 9,165 feet. The highest named points are Elkhorn Peak (9,165 ft), Glacier Mountain (9,157 ft) and Brown Mountain (8,903 ft). ODFW's description reads: "100% public lands. That part of Unit 60 west of Lostine Rvr Rd and trails 1670, 1673 and 1947 to Frazier Pass on Unit 60 boundary" ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 560B terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 3,458–7,997 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 5,670 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
  • 416.5 sq mi inside the boundary.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 32%

Roughly 68% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 41 tanks
  • 12 springs
  • 241 stream segments
  • 23 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Elkhorn Peak (9,165 ft), Glacier Mountain (9,157 ft), Lookout Mountain (8,804 ft)

Holding ground: Sand Pass (8,008 ft), Swamp Basin (7,849 ft), Sandy Saddle (7,681 ft), Summit Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
