Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in the Aldrich Unit: west of Dry Creek toward Aldrich Mountain

What the legal line covers

The hunt covers only the part of Unit 46 west of a line that starts at the junction of Highway 26 and Dry Creek. It follows Dry Creek south to West Dry Creek, then runs southeast on Forest Road 2140 to its junction with Forest Road 21 and continues from there. It's a once-in-a-lifetime style draw and a mistake on the line is costly.

Named high points

Aldrich Mountain, at 6,977 feet, gives the hunt its name. The area's named points also include Spanish Peak, Mount Pisgah, Windy Point and Round Mountain, all between about 6,700 and 6,900 feet. The named range starts around 2,392 feet. ODFW lists the hunt ground as mostly public, so you'll have plenty of room to glass. Begin with the biggest relief and the steepest rock, then work the slopes below it. ODFW's forecast has nothing specific for this hunt, so don't plan around claims about herd size or trends. Plan around terrain. Study Spanish Peak, Mount Pisgah and Windy Point on a topo map for cliff bands and steep slopes.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's boundary for this hunt covers about 1,950 square miles, 59% of it public land by ODFW's count. Named features inside the line fall in Crook County, Grant County and Wheeler County. Elevation runs from about 2,392 to 6,977 feet. The highest named points are Aldrich Mountain (6,977 ft), Spanish Peak (6,874 ft) and Mount Pisgah (6,817 ft). ODFW's description reads: "59% public lands. That part of Unit 46 west of the following line; starting at junction of Hwy 26 and Dry Cr, follow Dry Cr south to West Dry Cr; follow West Dry Cr south to FS Rd 2140; southeast on FS Rd 2140 to junction of FS Rd 21; follow FS Rd 21 sou" ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Unit 546A terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 3,246–6,258 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,590 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 1,950.4 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Who owns the ground

  • National Forest — 60%
  • BLM — 15%
  • State Trust — 8%
  • Private / Other — 17%

Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.

Water on the ground

  • 83 tanks
  • 77 springs
  • 1,131 stream segments
  • 21 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Named features inside the unit

Glass from: Aldrich Mountain (6,977 ft), Lookout Mountain (6,929 ft), Spanish Peak (6,874 ft), Mount Pisgah (6,817 ft)

Holding ground: Humphreys Pasture (6,344 ft), Indian Prairie (6,078 ft), McClanahan Meadow (5,928 ft), Hobble Spring, Keeton Spring

Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
