Elk Hunting in Unit 30
The Rogue unit takes in Mount McLoughlin, Butte Falls and the Upper Rogue country between Medford and Crater Lake. ODFW's Upper Rogue Travel Management Area gives Cascade-season elk a road-free escape.
Where to Find Elk in the Rogue Unit: Cascade closure areas above the Upper Rogue
The Upper Rogue closure area
During the Cascade Any Weapon elk season, ODFW partners with the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest to run the Upper Rogue Travel Management Area. It provides larger road-closure areas in the High Cascades Ranger District. ODFW says to focus there, because the closures give elk an escape from heavily trafficked roads, which elk tend to avoid. Upper Rogue and other TMA maps are posted by ODFW.
Big relief from Medford to the crest
The unit climbs from about 1373 ft to Mount McLoughlin at 9487 ft, with Máalsi Tip, Devils Peak, Lucifer and Jupiter among the other named peaks. The boundary follows Hwy 62 north from Medford, Hwy 230 and Hwy 138, then the Pacific Crest Trail and the Crater Lake National Park line. Butte Falls, Eagle Point, White City and Shady Cove are the nearest towns. Union Creek Road and the Butte Falls Highway reach the middle of the country. Imnaha and Daley Creek campgrounds are among the named camps, and OR 62 and Union Creek Road are the main routes toward the crest. Hwy 140 and Dead Indian Road mark the southern edge of the unit.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Rogue Unit, WMU 30, covers about 1,460 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 57% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Jackson County, Klamath County and Douglas County. Elevation runs from about 1,373 to 9,487 feet. The highest named points are Mount McLoughlin (9,487 ft), Máalsi Tip (7,653 ft) and Devils Peak (7,542 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 30 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 1,945–6,203 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 3,766 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
- 1,459.6 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 440 tanks
- 27 springs
- 4,937 stream segments
- 33 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.

Holding ground: Seven Lakes Basin (6,125 ft), Buck Basin (5,843 ft), Griffin Pass (5,758 ft), Dogwood Spring, Big Springs
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
