Where to Find Elk in the Applegate Unit: the wedge between I-5 and US 199
What the boundary establishes
The Applegate unit starts at Grants Pass, follows I-5 southeast to the California line, runs west along the state line to US Hwy 199 and returns on that highway. That wedge covers a lot of vertical country. Mount Ashland reaches 7491 ft, Dutchman Peak 7385 ft, Observation Peak 7335 ft, Wagner Butte 7225 ft and McDonald Peak 7209 ft. The low end sits near 937 ft. National forest and BLM maps cover it: Siskiyou NF, Rogue River NF and Medford BLM.
Towns and roads
Jacksonville, Rogue River, Gold Hill and Medford are within reach, and Lake Selmac and a few RV parks give places to stay. Forest roads such as NF 1035, FR 4803 and FR 41S15 climb toward the high ground. Use local scouting to find animals. Maps for the Siskiyou and Rogue River national forests and Medford BLM show the public pieces, and large parts of the unit are private. US 199 and I-5 give quick access to town, and forest roads climb from there. Expect a mix of public ridges and private valley bottoms, with rules that change at every fence.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Applegate Unit, WMU 28, covers about 1,325 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 57% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Jackson County and Josephine County. Elevation runs from about 937 to 7,491 feet. The highest named points are Mount Ashland (7,491 ft), Dutchman Peak (7,385 ft) and Observation Peak (7,335 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 28 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 1,189–6,078 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 2,990 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
- 1,324.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 771 tanks
- 6 springs
- 29,958 stream segments
- 24 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Mount Ashland (7,491 ft), Dutchman Peak (7,385 ft), Observation Peak (7,335 ft), Wagner Butte (7,225 ft)
Holding ground: Observation Gap (7,037 ft), Grouse Creek Gap (6,648 ft), Wymer Glade (6,646 ft), Sheep Camp Spring, Chocolate Falls
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
