Hunt 200 (Cascades Muzzleloader)

Six units, one hunt

The Cascades Muzzleloader hunt takes in all of Units 16, 19, 21, 22, 29 and 30. In the other pages here those are Santiam, McKenzie, Indigo, Dixon and Rogue, plus Unit 29. The hunt area crosses Lane, Jackson, Douglas, Linn, Clackamas and Marion counties. ODFW's hunt description gives the legal line and nothing more, and it doesn't offer a local forecast for the elk, so the honest advice is to pick a unit and study it.

Named points across the range

Mount McLoughlin stands at 9,487 feet, Diamond Peak at 8,726, Mount Bailey at 8,366, Tipsoo Peak at 8,005 and Máalsi Tip at 7,653. Named elevations run from near sea level to the top of McLoughlin. That gives you everything from foothills to volcano slopes, with no single habitat to describe. Choose the unit where you can scout best, read its own page and use ODFW's boundary maps to find public ground. Public land makes up much of the west slope, though ownership varies by unit. Use each unit's boundary description to see where the tag actually reaches before you plan a trip, and don't assume the whole hunt area is hunted the same way. A gate that is open in one unit may be locked in the next, so confirm access for each one before you commit to a basin.

The ground ODFW draws for this hunt

ODFW's boundary for this hunt covers about 11,961 square miles. Named features inside the line fall in Lane County, Jackson County, Douglas County, Linn County, Clackamas County and Marion County. The highest named points are Mount McLoughlin (9,487 ft), Diamond Peak (8,726 ft) and Mount Bailey (8,366 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.

Hunting with one shot

A muzzleloader gives you one shot, and then reloading takes time. That calls for patience. Pass on marginal chances, wait for a broadside or slightly quartering animal, and shoot only inside the range you've practised at. Pack extra powder and caps, and keep your gun dry on wet west-slope days. Bring a rest, whether sticks or a tree, since a steady aim matters more than a fast one.

Choosing a unit and carrying out

With six units to choose from, scouting decides your hunt. Spend preseason weekends in one unit, looking for the places elk feed and travel. Check with the land manager about fire closures and gate status, because the west slope has seen large fires and road access can change. Steep drainages mean long hauls, so plan to quarter an elk where it falls, carry game bags and bring a partner. ODFW doesn't give a herd read for this area, so rely on your own sign. Elk are big animals, and the west slope is steep. Think about where you can actually get one out, and choose ground with a road or trail within reach. That alone will narrow a large hunt area to a practical shortlist. Take a compass or a GPS and a paper map, because forest roads on the west slope fork often and signs go missing.

ODFW's 2026 elk hunts on this ground

Seasons, bag limits and tags come from ODFW's 2026 regulations. Check the current book before you apply or go, because these change every year.
