Where to Find Elk in the McKenzie Unit: burn edges, clearcuts and the timber-farm line
Burns that are still healing
The McKenzie unit climbs from about 328 ft in the foothills to The Husband at 7484 ft, with Fuji Mountain, Mount Ray, The Wife and Irish Mountain along the crest. ODFW says many lands that burned in the 2020-2023 fires still need more time before they benefit big game, and access is restricted in some areas. Elk can be found around the edges of the burns and near thinning operations or other openings created by the Forest Service. Check with the land manager before hunting any burned ground.
Foothill clearcuts and farm edges
At lower elevations in the Cascade foothills, ODFW suggests looking in two- to eight-year-old clearcuts. Elk are most plentiful at the timber and agricultural interface. Habitat quality matters: prospects are fair to good where it's strong and poor where it isn't. Blue River, Lowell and Marcola are the closest towns, and OR 58 opens up the foothills. Dolly Varden, Broken Bowl and Big Pool campgrounds are the named camps. OR 242, US 20 and the forest roads NF 5883 and NF 5897 reach the higher ground. Check closure and fire notices for the area before you drive in.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The McKenzie Unit, WMU 19, covers about 2,642 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 60% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Lane County, Linn County and Deschutes County. Elevation runs from about 328 to 7,484 feet. The highest named points are The Husband (7,484 ft), Fuji Mountain (7,133 ft) and Mount Ray (7,011 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 19 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 799–5,642 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 2,647 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
- 2,628.5 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 1,111 tanks
- 18 springs
- 1,323 stream segments
- 142 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
