Where to Find Elk in the Saddle Mountain Unit: Clatsop Ridge, the Klaskanine and Ecola Creek
The named elk ground
ODFW's forecast gives actual places. It lists Clatsop Ridge, Davis Point, the lower Klaskanine River, Young's, Necanicum and Lewis and Clark Rivers, and Ecola Creek as areas with higher elk numbers and open habitat. Those are the first spots to put on a map. The forecast also says bull survival has been good over several seasons.
Coast-range ground and who owns it
The unit starts at the mouth of the Columbia, runs east along the state line to the Clatskanie River, then south through Clatskanie and down Highway 47. Saddle Mountain tops out at 3246 feet, with Nicolai Mountain and Onion Peak close behind. The low end sits at the coast. Only a small share is public land. ODFW's hunt notes say vehicle access to certain private lands may be restricted to weekends only, so check the weekend rules before you plan a drive. Circle Creek Campground and Ecola Park Hiker's Camp are the listed camps. Highway 26, OR 47 and OR 53 cross the unit, while Buchanan Creek Road and the Soapstone Mainline reach into the timber. Gearhart, Seaside, Astoria and Cathlamet are the nearest towns, and Big Eddy County Park is another camp.
The ground ODFW draws for this hunt
The Saddle Mtn Unit, WMU 10, covers about 1,032 square miles measured on ODFW's polygon, and ODFW rates it 25% public land. Named features inside the line fall in Clatsop County, Columbia County and Tillamook County. Elevation runs from about 2 to 3,246 feet. The highest named points are Saddle Mountain (3,246 ft), Nicolai Mountain (3,009 ft) and Onion Peak (2,964 ft). ODFW's line is the legal one, so check it against a current land-ownership map, and get permission before you cross private ground or a locked gate inside it.
Unit 10 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4–2,193 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 864 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,032.2 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 92%
Roughly 8% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 246 tanks
- 1,115 stream segments
- 89 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Saddle Mountain (3,246 ft), Nicolai Mountain (3,009 ft), Green Mountain (2,496 ft), Dog Thief Point (2,348 ft)
Holding ground: Tidewater Summit (1,264 ft), Elk Flats (508 ft)
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
