Unit 54 (Unit 54)
New Mexico Hunting Guide — Elk, Mule Deer
Unit 54 covers mixed mountain and mesa country in northern New Mexico, running through Carson National Forest and adjoining BLM and private holdings. We hunt aspen benches, ponderosa ridges, and sagebrush-pinyon breaks from about 7,500 to 10,500 feet where resident elk herds use forested bedding by day and open parks at dawn and dusk. Three-year data shows 140 tags drawn against 85 applicants — one of the more accessible quality elk hunts in the state's public-draw pool.

Where to Find Elk in Unit 54
Unit 54 elk use classic northern New Mexico layered habitat.
Aspen-Conifer Benches (8,500–10,000 ft)
Mid-elevation aspen and mixed conifer is core bull country during September. We key on open-parked benches where cows feed at dawn.
Ponderosa Ridges and Saddles
Ponderosa pine ridges are transition corridors between bedding and feeding. Travel routes through saddles become predictable under pressure.
Sage and PJ Breaks
Lower elevations hold elk during late rifle when snow pushes herds off the high country. Sagebrush and pinyon-juniper breaks become late-season strongholds.
Unit 54 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 6,050–10,220 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 8,044 ft ; peaks can run higher. That spread means you can hunt two seasons in one day — plan clothing for both ends.
- 343.2 sq mi inside the boundary.
Who owns the ground
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 92%
Roughly 8% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 104 tanks
- 44 springs
- 534 stream segments
- 14 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
