New Mexico Hunting Guide — Mule Deer, Elk, Javelina
GMU 24 covers the Capitan Mountains and Lincoln National Forest foothills in south-central New Mexico. Where to Find Mule Deer in GMU 24
Mule deer in GMU 24 use the Capitan Mountain crest and the ponderosa pine slopes descending to the surrounding basin. Bucks concentrate in the mountain shrub and mixed conifer zone during the archery season and drop to the pinon-juniper foothills during the November rut.
Capitan Mountain Crest (8,000–9,600 ft)
The higher Capitan crest holds the largest bucks through summer and early archery season. Glass open slopes and parks from trail access points on the Lincoln NF north and south slopes.
Mountain Shrub Transition
The mountain mahogany and oak brush transition below the crest timber is a key buck staging zone. Bucks stage in this habitat before the rut and are most vulnerable to spot-and-stalk here in late September and October.
Unit 24 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 4,776–8,611 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 6,028 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,515.1 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 193 tanks
- 66 springs
- 5,991 stream segments
- 9 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
