Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Units 264, 265, 266: Ireteba Peaks, Keyhole Canyon and Black Canyon
Ireteba Peaks, Keyhole Canyon and the washes
NDOW's sheet for these units says little about where to hunt. It names six places and leaves the rest to your scouting: Ireteba Peaks, Keyhole Canyon, White Rock Wash, Pipe Spring Canyon, Boy Scout Canyon and Burro Wash. Treat that list as your starting set, and build the rest of your plan from time on the ground.
Newberry Mountains to the cliffs of Black Canyon
Each unit is its own piece of country. Unit 264 is the Newberry Mountains, Unit 265 the southern Eldorado Mountains and Unit 266 the northern Eldorados. The terrain changes a lot from one to the next. You'll find rolling hills, small and tight canyons near Lake Mohave, the steep and rugged faces of Spirit Mountain, and the sheer vertical cliffs of Black Canyon in Unit 266.
Decomposed granite in Units 264 and 265
Footing is the other thing to plan around. Many mountain ranges in Clark County are limestone, but much of Units 264 and 265 is decomposed granite, and NDOW warns that it gives a hunter on foot an unstable surface. Pick your line across those slopes with care, especially when you're closing on a ram.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in units 264, 265 and 266, about 893 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Clark County. The named ranges inside the line are Eldorado Mountains, Chiquita Hills and Newberry Mountains. The highest named points are Spirit Mountain (5,607 ft), Devils Thumb (5,165 ft) and Ireteba Peaks (5,037 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 489 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 48 springs inside it, Huse Spring, Rattlesnake Spring, Moss Spring and Jonah Spring among them.
