Nevada Bighorn Sheep

Unit 244 (Arrow Canyon Range and the Battleship Hills)

Nevada Hunting Guide — Bighorn Sheep

Unit 244 is the Arrow Canyon Range and the Battleship Hills, about 320 square miles of Clark County near Moapa. NDOW's desert bighorn sheet calls access challenging: wilderness on the north end, the Moapa River Indian Reservation across much of the east side, and cliff bands that stop a west-side approach from reaching the east. Permission from the Moapa Band of Paiutes is the key to the east side.

Where to Find Desert Bighorn Sheep in Unit 244: Side Canyon, Ute Canyon and the Battleship Hills

Side Canyon, Ute Canyon and Battleship Wash

NDOW's list for Unit 244 is short. It names Side Canyon, Ute Canyon and the Battleship Wash and Battleship Hills area. The Battleship Hills are the sub-ridges that, together with the Arrow Canyon Range, make up the unit, so between them and the two canyons you have the core of what the sheet recommends.

Four water developments in a dry year

The sheet's other tip depends on the weather. During dry conditions, consider hunting the country around the four water developments, which sit on the main mountain and in the Battleship Hills. Check how wet the fall has been before you decide whether to build your hunt around them.

Terrain here varies a lot. NDOW describes everything from fairly level, unbroken bajada to steep, rocky canyons and broken ledges, with elevations climbing from near Moapa to the top of the range. The main Arrow Canyon ridge is the hard end of that spread: extremely steep, rocky and physically demanding to hunt. Most of the ground that offers sheep hunting is public land administered by the BLM's Las Vegas District. The hunt runs from late November to New Year's Day.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in unit 244, about 320 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Clark County. The one named range inside the line is Arrow Canyon Range. The highest named points are Table Mountain (2,275 ft) and Dead Man Hill (2,107 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 1,536 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 7 springs inside it, High Springs, Muddy Spring, Peterson Spring and Hogan Spring among them.

Unit 244 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 1,608–3,900 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 2,450 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 319.5 sq mi inside the boundary.

Water on the ground

  • 13 tanks
  • 8 springs
  • 48 stream segments
  • 9 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
