Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 195: Jumbo Grade, Mount Davidson and the Flowery Range

Jumbo Grade to Mount Davidson and Mount Bullion

Private land shapes everything in Unit 195, so NDOW tells hunters to concentrate on the south end. Jumbo Grade, climbing toward Mount Bullion and Mount Davidson, may offer the best chances. Work the country from Jumbo Grade north to State Route 341. The Flowery Range, running east from Virginia City, is the other area the sheet thinks is worth time.

Aspen glades and mahogany around Mount Davidson

NDOW gets specific about cover. Focus on the aspen glades draining the south and west sides of the drainages around Mount Davidson. Deer here tend to stay fairly close to those mountain riparian zones and to mahogany patches.

The forested ground gives deer thermal cover, but the pinyon-juniper is dense enough to make spotting them hard. The sheet's answer is good optics at dawn and dusk, which it calls the most efficient way to find deer here. On north-facing slopes, still hunting slowly through the pinyon-juniper can also pay off. NDOW doesn't formally survey this herd. It estimates about 500 animals, widely scattered at low density, so expect to cover ground for every deer you see.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A mule deer tag for this group is good in unit 195, about 557 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Storey County, Washoe County and Lyon County. The named ranges inside the line are Virginia Range and Flowery Range. The highest named points are Mount Davidson (7,836 ft), Ophir Hill (7,778 ft) and Mount Bullion (7,677 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,153 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 17 springs inside it, Double Diamond Spring, Sutro Springs, Alum Spring and Carson Hot Springs among them.
