Where to Find Mule Deer in Unit 192: Genoa Peak Road, Kingsbury Grade and the Carson River
Riparian draws off Genoa Peak Road
Early-season archers and muzzleloader hunters should work the riparian areas on both sides of the ridgeline off Genoa Peak Road. NDOW says deer use the higher elevations in those areas early on.
The 6,000- to 6,500-foot band and Kingsbury Grade
During the general and late archery seasons, look for deer between the 6,000- and 6,500-foot contours, mostly out of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Still-hunting anywhere off Kingsbury Grade, State Route 207, is worth trying. The southern part of the unit along the Carson River can be productive too, and so can the public land west of Topaz Lake.
The Carson River Interstate Herd
Most deer in Unit 192 belong to the Carson River Interstate Herd, which NDOW manages together with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Some of them migrate between the two states. Deer that summer in California start filtering onto Nevada winter range around mid-November, and most have arrived by mid-December. The general season overlaps the breeding season, when some deer come down to lower elevations.
Don't expect thick herds. NDOW describes the deer as widely scattered, even in winter, at moderate densities. The department flies helicopter surveys of this herd, usually in late November and again in early March.
The ground NDOW draws for this tag
A mule deer tag for this group is good in unit 192, about 202 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Douglas County. The one named range inside the line is Indian Hills. The highest named points are East Peak (9,547 ft), Genoa Peak (9,132 ft) and South Camp Peak (8,842 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,720 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 4 springs inside it, China Spring, Doud Springs, Hobo Hot Springs and Walleys Hot Springs among them.
