Nevada Bighorn Sheep

Unit 181 (Sand Springs, Fairview and Monte Cristo Ranges)

Nevada Hunting Guide — Bighorn Sheep

Unit 181 covers about 2,400 square miles east of Fallon in Churchill, Mineral, Lyon and Nye counties. Desert bighorns live in four areas: the Sand Springs Range, the Fairview Range, Slate Mountain and the Monte Cristo Mountains. Much of the ground and all of the airspace is controlled by the Naval Air Station, so tagholders face a background check and a DOD briefing.

Where to Find Desert Bighorn Sheep in Unit 181: Contact Canyon, Fairview Peak and the Monte Cristos

Four herds, four ranges

Unit 181 isn't one block of sheep country. NDOW describes several separate areas, each with its own herd. The Sand Springs Range is reached from Fairview Valley. The Fairview Range sits on the east side of that valley and carries the unit's tallest peak. Slate Mountain lies to the south, split from the Fairview Range by Bell Canyon. The fourth main herd is in the Monte Cristo Mountains, south of Bell Flat.

Contact Canyon, Bell Canyon, Fairview Peak, Mt Anna and Mt Annie

NDOW lists where rams have been taken recently. In the Sand Springs Range, harvest has come from throughout the range, including Contact Canyon and the canyons next to it. On Slate Mountain it has come from the mountain and Bell Canyon. The Fairview Range has produced rams throughout, Fairview Peak included, and in the Monte Cristo Mountains the sheet names Mt Anna and Mt Annie.

The biologist adds that hunting effort usually starts at lower elevations, just off the valley floor, before working up. All four areas are steep and rocky, so pick one range, learn it, and glass it from the bottom before committing to a climb.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in unit 181, about 2,374 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Churchill County, Mineral County, Lyon County and Nye County. The named ranges inside the line are White Throne Mountains, Bunejug Mountains, Sinkavata Hills, Dead Camel Mountains, Sand Springs Range and Blow Sand Mountains. The highest named points are Fairview Peak (8,293 ft), Sand Springs Range Cairn (7,434 ft) and Bell Mountain (7,145 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 3,883 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 11 springs inside it, Rock Springs, Bradys Hot Springs, Rock Springs and Lucky Boy Spring among them.

Unit 181 terrain and land status

Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up

The lay of it

  • 3,869–5,923 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 4,304 ft ; peaks can run higher.
  • 2,373.7 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.

Water on the ground

  • 16 tanks
  • 31 springs
  • 307 stream segments
  • 21 lakes

Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
