Where to Find Mule Deer in Units 151 - 156: Mount Lewis and the Simpson Park Range

Mill, Trout and Horse Creeks around Mount Lewis

NDOW says the highest mule deer densities in Area 15 are in Units 152 and 155. In Unit 152, most deer are in the canyons around Mount Lewis. The sheet names Mill Creek, Trout Creek and Horse Creek as examples, and those drainages are a sensible place to start glassing.

Bates, Buck and Fagin Mountains in Unit 155

In Unit 155 the deer are mostly on and around Bates, Buck and Fagin mountains in the Simpson Park Range. Those three are the core of that unit's hunting, according to NDOW.

The other units, and why Unit 156 is a pass

Elsewhere in the group, the sheet suggests the Battle Mountains in Unit 151, the Fish Creek Mountains and Mount Moses in Unit 153, and Hall and Silver Creeks in Unit 154. Expect fewer deer in those than in 152 and 155, since NDOW lists them as suggestions rather than high-density areas. Unit 156 is the one to skip. NDOW says hunting there is typically unproductive because mule deer density is extremely low, so don't spend scouting days on it unless you've already worked through everything else.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A mule deer tag for this group is good in units 151, 152, 153, 154, 155 and 156, about 4,176 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Lander County and Eureka County. The named ranges inside the line are Ravenswood, Fish Creek Mountains, Toiyabe Range, Simpson Park Mountains and Shoshone Range. The highest named points are Mount Callaghan (10,178 ft), Mount Lewis (9,638 ft) and Fagin Mountain (9,127 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,532 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 175 springs inside it, Crystal Spring, Indian Box Spring, Bens Spring and Charco Spring among them.
