Where to Find Desert Bighorn in Units 133, 245: the Pahranagat ranges, Badger Mountain and Hancock Summit

Badger Mountain, Hancock Summit and the named guzzlers

Unit 245, which holds the Pahranagat and East Pahranagat ranges, carries most of this group's sheep. NDOW finds them in moderate numbers in the north-central Pahranagat Range, throughout the East Pahranagat Range, and at the south end of the Mount Irish Range in Unit 133, where the habitat is thinner and sits north of Hancock Summit on State Route 375.

The sheet's specific spots are Badger Mountain and the ground south of the Badger guzzler, the country south of Hancock Summit, the area around the North Wall guzzler, the Medsger Pass guzzler, and Curtis Canyon with the ground next to it in the East Pahranagat Range.

Following water through the Pahranagats

Whether the sheep stick to free water depends on the weather. Water here ranges from small springs to artificial developments and guzzlers, and NDOW tells hunters to learn a map that shows them. Three of the group's six water developments sit in the northwest part of Unit 245, the hardest corner to reach. Expect rugged, rocky country with steep canyons and rimrock, desert shrubs down low and mountain brush and pinyon-juniper higher up. In the Pahranagat Range the sheet puts elevations between 4,000 and about 8,000 feet.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A bighorn sheep tag for this group is good in units 133 and 245, about 2,359 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Lincoln County and Nye County. The named ranges inside the line are East Pahranagat Range, Seaman Range, Pahranagat Range, Tikaboo Range, Timpahute Range and Mount Irish Range. The highest named points are Worthington Peak (8,926 ft), Meeker Peak (8,746 ft) and Mount Irish (8,720 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 4,119 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 68 springs inside it, Shingle Spring, Logan Spring, White Bluff Spring and Monte Spring among them.
