Where to Find Pronghorn in Units 043 - 046: Grass Valley, Pumpernickel Valley and the water sources

Within two miles of water

NDOW's rule of thumb for these units is simple: antelope are generally found within about two miles of a water source. They range from the valley floors up into the higher elevations of each mountain range, and the highest densities are in Units 043 and 044.

Humboldt Range and East Range

In Unit 043, the Humboldt Range, the sheet names the Relief Canyon Mine area, Buffalo Spring, Limerick Canyon, and Coyote Canyon north to Creek Hill. In Unit 044, the East Range, it lists the Dun Glen area, Willow Creek Road, Spaulding Canyon, Table Mountain, Goldbanks Hill, Rose Creek Mountain, and the country along Grass Valley Road from Winnemucca south to the end of the unit.

Tobin Range and Sonoma Range

Grass Valley Road shows up again for Units 045 and 046. In the Tobin Range, add Pollard Canyon and Jim Creek, the base of Golconda Canyon, Jersey Valley, and the base of Morning View Canyon north to Flag Canyon. In the Sonoma Range, NDOW lists Elbow Canyon, Grand Trunk Canyon, Sheep Ranch Canyon Road, Pumpernickel Valley, Smelser Pass and Summit Spring, the Sonoma Lake area, the Edna Mountains, Pole Creek, Krammer Hill and the Button Point area.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A pronghorn tag for this group is good in units 043, 044, 045 and 046, about 2,813 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Pershing County, Humboldt County and Churchill County. The named ranges inside the line are Humboldt Range, East Range, West Humboldt Range, Goldbanks Hills, Tobin Range and Granite Hills. The highest named points are Star Peak (9,822 ft), Mount Tobin (9,760 ft) and Sonoma Peak (9,336 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 3,891 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 65 springs inside it, Summit Spring, Mud Spring, McElhany Spring and Black Knob Spring among them.
