Nevada Antelope Bighorn Sheep

Unit 021, 022 (Fort Sage Mountain, Sand Hills and Virginia Mountains)

Nevada Hunting Guide — Antelope, Bighorn Sheep

Units 021, 022 sit just north of Reno, about 1,951 square miles of Washoe and Lassen counties. NDOW's sheet calls pronghorn densities low and says finding them takes work, but low hunter numbers make for a quality hunt. Access is good in Unit 021 and fair to limited in 022, where ranches and locked gates close off much of the Virginia Mountains.

Where to Find Pronghorn in Units 021, 022: Seven Lakes Mountain, Fort Sage Mountain and the Sand Hills

Seven Lakes Mountain, Fort Sage Mountain and the Sand Hills

In August, water and forage are what limit pronghorn, so most uplands with both should have animals around them. Through the summer, the higher ground near Spanish Flat, Seven Lakes Mountain, Fort Sage Mountain and the north end of the Sand Hills generally holds pronghorn. Spanish Flat is very hard to get to.

Adobe Spring and the powerline road

The area near Adobe Spring, on the north end of the Virginia Mountains, should also hold pronghorn. So should the hills along the major powerline road east and southeast of Fort Sage Mountain. On the west side of the Fox Range, check near water sources.

Burns in Unit 021

Parts of Unit 021 burned in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Know where those fires were before you scout, because the ground may look very different from an older map or from what you remember.

Densities are low, and NDOW expects you to work for an animal. The trade-off is that few hunters come here, which keeps it a quality hunt for those who do.

The ground NDOW draws for this tag

A pronghorn tag for this group is good in units 021 and 022, about 1,951 square miles measured on NDOW's own boundary, in Washoe County. The named ranges inside the line are Fox Range, Sand Hills, French Mountains, Terraced Hills, Virginia Mountains and Painted Hills. The highest named points are Tule Peak (8,715 ft), Virginia Peak (8,360 ft) and Pah Rah Mountain (8,248 ft), and the lowest named ground sits near 3,817 feet. We don't print a land-status split for Nevada groups, because the figures we held didn't come from BLM's surface-management data; check BLM's current map for private parcels before you cross a fence or a cattle guard. GNIS names 119 springs inside it, Miller Spring, West Springs, Cottonwood Spring and Right Hand Spring among them.
