Where to Find Mountain Goats in Unit G518: Granite Peak, Froze-to-Death and the Beartooth plateau

Mountain goat district 518 is called Froze-to-Death, and the name is the honest one. It covers roughly 96 square miles of Carbon, Stillwater and Park counties in the heart of the Absaroka-Beartooth, and FWP publishes a boundary for it and no account at all of where its goats stand.

The boundary, and what it tells you

FWP runs the line from the Montana-Wyoming border at Big Moose Lake west along that border to the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River, northwest up the Clarks Fork to the mouth of the Broadwater River, up to Zimmer Creek, north to Iceberg Peak and Grasshopper Glacier, northeast down West Rosebud Creek to Forest Service Trail 17 between Mystic Lake and East Rosebud, east along that trail to East Rosebud Creek, and south up the creek to Fossil Lake. Every one of those is a feature you'll navigate by, and the trail and lake names are the practical part: this is a district with almost no road in it.

The highest ground in Montana

Granite Peak stands inside this boundary at 12,715 feet — the highest point in the state. Tempest Mountain reaches 12,476 feet, Mount Peal 12,415, Glacier Peak 12,303, Mount Villard 12,281, Cairn Mountain 12,208 and Mystic Mountain 12,068. Mount Wilse is 11,818, Froze-to-Death Mountain itself 11,744 and Mount Hole-in-the-Wall 11,453. Lower down the list, Shepard Mountain sits at 10,974, Pika Peak at 10,916 and Oxide Mountain at 10,051. Every one of those carries a National Forest flag in our land-status data, so access isn't the question here. Altitude is.

No mapped water, and what that means

The water layer we hold has no named spring or stream reach inside this boundary, which on ground at this elevation reads as a gap in the data rather than dry country — the district holds permanent snow, glacier ice and the East and West Rosebud drainages. Goats don't concentrate on water the way desert game does, so it changes little about the hunt. What it does mean is that the usual planning shortcuts don't apply, and the terrain itself is the only thing to plan around.
