Unit A36B-1 (Pronghorn Hunt Area 36B-1)

Idaho Fish and Game's material on hunt area 36B-1 stops at the boundary — there is no agency account of where its pronghorn live. The country below is verified; where to begin in it is our judgement, not the agency's.

What hunt area 36B-1 is

Idaho Fish and Game describes pronghorn hunt area 36B-1 as all of Unit 36B and Unit 28. That is whole units, so the outline on this page follows unit lines all the way round. The units it is drawn from lie in Custer and Lemhi counties. Idaho Fish and Game also uses the code 36B-1 for deer and elk hunts, and in its own words "hunt areas are different for each species" — those are other pieces of ground, and this page is the pronghorn area.

High ground inside the line: White Mountain, Twin Peaks and Bald Mountain

Named high points inside the hunt area include White Mountain at 10,431 feet, Twin Peaks at 10,328 feet, Bald Mountain at 10,304 feet, Taylor Mountain at 9,947 feet and Ramshorn Mountain at 9,890 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Pronghorn stay on the open rolling ground and leave the timber alone.

Holding ground: Remenclau Saddle, Oregon Gulch and Williams Creek Summit

Below them sit Remenclau Saddle at 7,898 feet, Oregon Gulch at 7,885 feet, Williams Creek Summit at 7,818 feet, Frog Meadows at 7,799 feet and Spruce Gulch at 7,638 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past on the way to somewhere steeper. Two you can watch from a single knob is worth more than five you have to drive between.

Water: Magpie Spring, Sheephorn Spring and Dishrag Spring

Named sources include Magpie Spring, Sheephorn Spring, Dishrag Spring, Crib Spring, Sagebrush Spring and Napias Creek Falls. Nothing in the data says which of them run in autumn, so a scouting trip earns its fuel.

How high the named ground goes

Named ground inside hunt area 36B-1 runs from 3,277 feet to 10,431 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.

Idaho Fish and Game's per-unit harvest statistics describe general seasons on game management units, so there is no pronghorn success figure we can tie to hunt area 36B-1 alone, and we won't borrow one from a unit. The plan: spot from a vehicle or a rise at distance, then plan a stalk that uses the only cover there is — the curve of the ground.

The 2026 controlled hunts

Idaho Fish and Game's 2026 rules list one controlled hunt for pronghorn in hunt area 36B-1.

• Hunt 4004 — either sex pronghorn, 10 tags, Sep 25–Oct 24

Dates and tag numbers are IDFG's as printed for that season, and IDFG changes hunt areas between years, so check the current booklet before you apply.

Applying for hunt area 36B-1

Idaho Fish and Game's first application period for deer, elk and pronghorn runs May 1 to June 5, with results in early July, and a second period runs August 5 to 15 for what is left. Anyone drawn for a limited pronghorn hunt in the first period must sit out the next year's first period for limited pronghorn hunts. Two to four hunters may apply together for the same hunt. Idaho's draw is random, with no preference or bonus points to build.

Glassing from Yellowjacket Mountains, Keystone Mountain and Black Mountain

Take a position on one of Yellowjacket Mountains (9,509 ft), Keystone Mountain (9,509 ft), Black Mountain (9,501 ft) and Gant Ridge (9,434 ft) and be on it before light. Work the morning with the air falling away from you, then accept that by mid-morning the wind has reversed and the plan has to change with it. A tripod is worth more here than another hour of walking. On the rut hunts, early-season bucks hold does and can be decoyed where the law allows it.

A first plan from the pins on this page

The map above marks White Mountain, Twin Peaks, Bald Mountain and Taylor Mountain as places to see from, and Povert Flat, Goodluck Meadow, Juliette Basin and Magpie Spring as ground to watch. Each pin is a named feature verified to fall inside the hunt-area line, not a spot anyone has hunted. Walk between two of them rather than driving between four, and you will learn more in a day.

What a day here costs you

With 7,154 feet between the lowest and highest ground, the walk back up out of a kill site is the part to plan first. One good position held through the whole of first light beats three visited in a hurry.

What we can't tell you

Some of the ground named above carries no land-status flag we trust, so check ownership on a current layer before you hunt it. We have no pronghorn success figure for this hunt area that survives checking against Idaho Fish and Game's own harvest and hunter counts, and we would rather say so than print a statewide average as though it were measured here.
