Where to Find Shiras Moose in Unit 4
Idaho Fish and Game's material on unit 4 stops at the boundary — there is no agency account of where its Shiras moose live. So the ground below is the unit's own and the read on where to start is ours, labelled as such. The unit lies in Bonner, Kootenai and Shoshone counties. It runs to about 1,228 square miles.
How Idaho Fish and Game sets up Shiras moose hunting in unit 4
Idaho Fish and Game hunts Shiras moose here only by controlled hunt, and describes its moose hunt area 4 as all of Unit 4. All of Unit 4.
The lines of the unit: Pend Oreille Lake, Alene River and Little North Fork
Idaho Fish and Game draws unit 4 in Bonner, Kootenai and Shoshone counties on a line that runs along State Highway 3, Interstate 90, Forest Highway 9 and Forest Service Road 209, and past Pend Oreille Lake, Alene River and Little North Fork, written out corner by corner in its unit boundary descriptions. It tells you the shape of the unit and nothing about its inhabitants. What it does give you is the way in: the rivers and highways you cross, and the divides that decide which drainage you end up in.
High ground inside the line: Granite Peak, Tiger Peak and Idaho Point
Named high points inside the unit include Granite Peak at 6,804 feet, Tiger Peak at 6,606 feet, Idaho Point at 6,497 feet, Eighty Peak at 6,450 feet and Ulm Peak at 6,441 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Moose want willow, water and shade, and they rarely leave the drainage that has all three.
Holding ground: Taylor Saddle, Cascade Saddle and Moon Saddle
Below them sit Taylor Saddle at 4,766 feet, Cascade Saddle at 4,700 feet, Moon Saddle at 4,659 feet, Flat Creek Saddle at 4,607 feet and Military Gulch at 4,539 feet. Those are the basins, parks and bottoms this unit has, and they are what you glass into from above. Pick the one with the least road on its upwind side.
Water: Freezeout Spring, Drexall Spring and Shadow Falls
The water inside the unit line comes to 400 mapped stream reaches, 32 lakes, 105 stock tanks and 5 springs. Named sources include Freezeout Spring, Drexall Spring and Shadow Falls. On ground with that many tanks, knowing which two or three hold water in your season is the most useful thing a scouting trip can tell you.
Reading the land status
Our ownership read for this unit is approximate — it comes out as National Forest 60%, Private / Other 17%, BLM 15% and State Trust 8%, so treat it as a starting point and check a current land-status layer before you plan a route. Named ground inside unit 4 runs from 2,130 feet to 6,804 feet — more than 4,000 feet between the named features alone, so the season you draw decides which part of it you hunt.
Unit 4 terrain and land status
Measured from the unit boundary, not from the agency write-up
The lay of it
- 2,682–5,795 ft on a terrain sample , averaging 3,776 ft ; peaks can run higher.
- 1,227.6 sq mi inside the boundary. Big enough that picking one drainage beats driving three.
Who owns the ground
- National Forest — 60%
- BLM — 15%
- State Trust — 8%
- Private / Other — 17%
Roughly 83% is public. Carry a land-status layer anyway — these are area percentages, not a map of where the boundaries fall.
Water on the ground
- 105 tanks
- 5 springs
- 400 stream segments
- 32 lakes
Counts from mapping data, so this is how many exist, not how many hold water in a dry year. Sitting water only pays where you find fresh tracks.
Named features inside the unit
Glass from: Granite Peak (6,804 ft), Idaho Point (6,497 ft), Latour Peak (6,364 ft), Snowstorm Peak (6,346 ft)
Holding ground: Mullan Pass (5,145 ft), Moon Pass (4,952 ft), Thompson Pass (4,860 ft), Freezeout Spring, Drexall Spring
Every one of these was tested against the unit polygon before it went on the map. They are starting points, not agency recommendations.
How to Hunt Shiras Moose in Unit 4
Moose Success Rates
Idaho Fish and Game's 2025 harvest estimates put Shiras moose success in unit 4 at 95% — 19 animals taken by 20 hunters. On a sample that small the percentage moves several points with one animal, so read the hunter count beside it.
These are the agency's own printed figures for this unit, not a modelled estimate and not a state average. They describe one season, so check Idaho Fish and Game's current harvest estimates before you read a trend into them.
Moose Draw Odds
| Season | Tags | Applicants | Draw % | Pts (n/p) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Controlled — 1st Drawing either sex (resident) | 9 | 295 | 3.0% | — |
| Controlled — 1st Drawing either sex (nonresident) | 1 | 38 | 3.0% | — |
Data from 2026 draw results. Each row is one residency pool — read the label before the number. This agency publishes no point thresholds, so the Pts column stays blank and these are pool odds, not what a point total draws.
Open in Draw Odds EngineIdaho Fish and Game's 2026 first drawing for Shiras moose in unit 4, with residents and nonresidents kept apart because they draw from different tag pools:
- Hunt 3016 — residents 295 applicants for 9 tags, 3% drawn; nonresidents 38 applicants for 1 tag, 3% drawn
- Hunt 3017 — residents 49 applicants for 4 tags, 8% drawn; nonresidents 26 applicants for 1 tag, 4% drawn
- Hunt 3018 — residents 41 applicants for 4 tags, 10% drawn; nonresidents 12 applicants for 1 tag, 8% drawn
Idaho draws at random with no point system, so these are what that year happened to look like, not a requirement to build toward. Idaho Fish and Game reuses hunt numbers for different areas between years, so the figures are matched on the area each hunt had in 2026. Checked against Idaho Fish and Game's hunt planner draw results on 2026-06-09.
