Where to Find Bighorn Sheep in Unit S34
What CPW publishes for unit S34 is a boundary, not a bighorn sheep map. So the ground below is the unit's own and the read on where to start is ours, labelled as such. The unit lies in El Paso and Teller counties.
The lines of the unit: USFS 393 and U.S. 24 to Woodland Park
CPW has unit S34 bounded on the north by USFS 393, 300 and 320; on the east by I-25; on the south and west by U.S. 24 to Woodland Park. Read it as a frame, not as a hint about animals. Those features are what you will check against the map all week, and the divides among them are the ones that matter.
High ground inside the line: Bald Mountain, Blodgett Peak and Cathedral Rock
Named high points inside the unit include Bald Mountain at 9,462 feet, Blodgett Peak at 9,400 feet, Cathedral Rock at 7,331 feet, Monument Rock at 7,177 feet and Echo Rock at 6,695 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Sheep need rock to escape into and will not stand far from it.
Holding ground: Stanley Canyon, Queens Canyon and Woodmen Valley
Below them sit Stanley Canyon at 7,205 feet, Queens Canyon at 6,527 feet, Woodmen Valley at 6,484 feet, Black Canyon at 6,419 feet and Wildcat Gulch. Those are the basins, parks and bottoms this unit has, and they are what you glass into from above. Two you can watch from a single knob is worth more than five you have to drive between.
The herd this unit belongs to: RBS-14
CPW does not manage bighorn sheep unit by unit. It manages them as data analysis unit RBS-14, and unit S34 is one piece of it. CPW puts no other unit in RBS-14, so this unit carries the herd on its own. That matters twice over: the population objective and the licence numbers are set for the whole area, and the animals move across unit lines inside it without noticing them.
