Where to Find Mountain Goat in Unit G15
What CPW publishes for unit G15 is a boundary, not a mountain goat map. So the ground below is the unit's own and the read on where to start is ours, labelled as such. The unit lies in Summit, Grand and Clear Creek counties.
The lines of the unit: USFS 132 (Ute Pass Rd.), Grand CR 50 and U.S. 40
CPW has unit G15 bounded on the north by USFS 132 (Ute Pass Rd.), 138, 139 (Crooked Creek Rd.) and Grand CR 50; on the east by U.S. 40 and I-70/U.S. 6; on the south by U.S. 6/I-70 and U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass; on the west by U.S. 6 and Colo. 9. That is a legal description, not a habitat map. Those features are what you will check against the map all week, and the divides among them are the ones that matter.
High ground inside the line: Bard Peak, Mount Parnassus and Pettingell Peak
Named high points inside the unit include Bard Peak at 13,615 feet, Mount Parnassus at 13,566 feet, Pettingell Peak at 13,529 feet, Engelmann Peak at 13,355 feet and Hagar Mountain at 13,169 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Goats live above the trees on cliff and talus and come down only when weather makes them.
Holding ground: Bottle Pass, Berthoud Pass and Dry Gulch
Below them sit Bottle Pass at 11,323 feet, Berthoud Pass at 11,321 feet, Dry Gulch at 10,508 feet, Butler Gulch at 10,405 feet and Hamilton Gulch at 10,378 feet. That is the low country of the unit — the ground animals drop into when they are pushed or when the weather turns. Work out which of them you can see from one position before you pick a camp.
Public ground to start from: Bakerville STL, Blue River SWA - Eagle's Nest Unit and Blue River SWA - Sutton Unit
CPW lists Bakerville STL, Blue River SWA - Eagle's Nest Unit, Blue River SWA - Sutton Unit, Georgetown SWA and Ptarmigan STL inside this unit as ground open to public hunting. Each property sets its own restrictions, and the agency's page for it is where they are written down. Federal land covers about 62% of the unit on top of those.
The herd this unit belongs to: MG-07
CPW does not manage mountain goat unit by unit. It manages them as data analysis unit MG-07, and unit G15 is one piece of it. The rest of MG-07 is unit G7, unit G10 and unit G16. So the objective behind your tag was written for that whole area, and a neighbouring unit in the same herd is a fairer comparison than the statewide figure.
