Where to Find Mountain Goat in Unit G05

CPW draws an exact line around unit G05 and says nothing about where the mountain goat stand inside it. Every place named below sits inside the unit line. Which of them holds animals in your season is for you to find out. The unit lies in La Plata, San Juan, Hinsdale and Archuleta counties.

The lines of the unit: San Juan-Ouray Co. line, Continental Divide and Los Pinos River-Piedra River divide

CPW has unit G05 bounded on the north by San Juan-Ouray Co. line and Continental Divide; on the east by Los Pinos River-Piedra River divide, East Creek and Los Pinos River; on the south by U.S. 160; on the west by U.S. 550. It tells you the shape of the unit and nothing about its inhabitants. What it does give you is the way in: the rivers and highways you cross, and the divides that decide which drainage you end up in.

High ground inside the line: Mount Eolus, Needle Mountains and Windom Peak

Named high points inside the unit include Mount Eolus at 14,016 feet, Needle Mountains at 14,008 feet, Windom Peak at 13,979 feet, North Eolus at 13,975 feet and Sunlight Peak at 13,965 feet. Several carry a public-land flag in our data, which makes them the first places to try for a view. Goats live above the trees on cliff and talus and come down only when weather makes them.

Holding ground: Stony Pass, McCarty Basin and Cataract Basin

Below them sit Stony Pass at 12,593 feet, McCarty Basin at 12,583 feet, Cataract Basin at 12,513 feet, Dives Basin at 12,490 feet and Alaska Basin at 12,445 feet. These are the folds worth watching, and the ones other hunters walk past on the way to somewhere steeper. Two you can watch from a single knob is worth more than five you have to drive between.

Public ground to start from: Andrews Lake SWA, Bayfield Lions Club Shooting Range SWA and Haviland Lake SWA

CPW lists Andrews Lake SWA, Bayfield Lions Club Shooting Range SWA and Haviland Lake SWA inside this unit as ground open to public hunting. Each property sets its own restrictions, and the agency's page for it is where they are written down. Federal land covers about 58% of the unit on top of those.

The herd this unit belongs to: MG-05

CPW does not manage mountain goat unit by unit. It manages them as data analysis unit MG-05, and unit G05 is one piece of it. CPW puts no other unit in MG-05, so this unit carries the herd on its own. So the objective behind your tag was written for that whole area, and a neighbouring unit in the same herd is a fairer comparison than the statewide figure.

CPW's 2026 draw recap for mountain goat in unit G05, by hunt code, with resident and nonresident kept apart because the two draw from different licence pools:

  • GEG05O1R — Rifle, 1st Season, Either Sex, resident: 615 applicants for 2 licences, 0.3% drawn, 3 preference points needed
